Bangladesh: A State Not Yet Sprouted

Of all the countries that have won their sovereignty in the past 50 years, few are as sprawling of a state as Bangladesh. Bangladesh has established itself as an enormous population center and a mighty, economic powerhouse. Yet it simultaneously faces immense problems that seem to permanently position it as a third-world nation. Bangladesh's European-influenced government, robust economy, and cultural icons have created one of the most prominent countries in Asia.

Bangladesh is host to a long line of tumultous history, one of violence and ethnic strife. On August 15, 1947, after much relcutance and violent persuasion by militiary means, the British Empire agreed to enact the Partition of India and split South Asia into two autonoumous states, India and Pakistan. The ethnic reasons for division were motivated by religious differences between Hindu India and Islamic Pakistan. But Pakistan was not the nation-state that it appeared to be, and a long history of differing Bengali culture eventually resulted in the creation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the People's Republic of Bangladesh in 1971. Even after achieving its nation of cultural homogenity, Bangladesh still faced several problems. A Constitution was enacted in 1972, but deferred after a coup in 1982. It finally was restored on November 10, 1986. The Constitution had established a parliamentary democracy, where every five years people voted for the unicameral parliament, called the Jatiyo Sangshad.
