What is going on in the world today? Are there any similarities with how the world was run 65 years ago? The 2002 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers was created and produced by a crew with numerous amounts of well known Hollywood names. Two men with some of the biggest names in Hollywood that backed this miniseries with their talent were Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The miniseries was released in 2002, only a year after the events of September 11th. The show was aired on HBO during prime time hours, aimed at Americans who may not have had a strong sense of this era in history. Band of Brothers stresses the bond between men who have willingly come together to fight for their country because they felt it was their duty. It also displays the importance coming together and fighting a force of evil, and being unified by your country. How can this miniseries be applied to our modern day culture? The miniseries is aimed to get the attention of anyone people who are willing to listen, and realize, that history may repeat itself. The miniseries focuses on the relationship of men, and how their bond is created. When does this become part of our lives? The history of World War 2 is mostly known by one name, Hitler. A tyrant of evil, an evil genius who put thoughts of hatred into his people’s minds, and because he ruled, allowed evil and hatred to grow, and become reigning. Band of Brothers story line follows the events of paratroopers, volunteer infantry men. But when called upon by our nation today, do we rise up to the call, and volunteer for the armed forces? So how does the miniseries depicting the world nearly 65 years ago relate to our world today? More than you may think.

... may on a slightly different battle front. The outcome of evil and hatred remains the same, and Americans fight to free those who are oppressed by it. And although the support of the war effort may not be the same as it was when back when this movie was based, the support deep down is still there. In the words of Tom Hanks “I am fascinated by this period and see it as something that very much relates to how we live our lives today. The world is still by and large, a question of what is right and what is wrong. And the best example we can have at our disposal is to take a look at what happened during the Second World War” (Hanks, BBC).The film uses its World War to premise of action and war time to show how Americans have and can come together as a whole to face modern day obstacles. There are many similarities to how the world was, and how the world is today.
