Summarize the arguments in favor of the ban on tobacco advertising in India
The proposed legislation to ban the advertisements of tobacco/cigarette during the cultural and sports events in India was meant to discourage promotion of tobacco/cigarette among younger generation. It was also intended to send a signal to the general public that government of India does not support spread of tobacco. Another important objective of this legislation was to strengthen the hands of the Government in launching the anti-smoking campaign by the government of India. It was a very important and correct step by GOI as it is a moral responsibility of every Government to look after the welfare and well being of its people. Every responsible Government is also committed promote positive habits and those products and practices which are healthy and good for society. Tobacco being one of the main cause of ill health and many diseases must be discouraged by every responsible and benevolent Government. Moreover if more people fall into the habit of smoking, it may lead them to more worst ills like drugs. T...
Once the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Margaret Chan said “tobacco is the only industry that produces products to make huge profits and at the same time damage the health and kill their consumers.” Tobacco is one of the main addictions that lead to millions of deaths, and hence, it is still not banned, but companies make millions of dollars by manufacturing cigarettes. Many people believe that graphic warnings would be one of the ways to reduce the number of people smoking, and prevent from diseases such as cancer, or lung problems. However, tobacco industries oppose to this movement because it is effecting their profits and reputation. This is a very egoistic perspective because they use the population to become a profitable company while millions of people suffer on that. People has been fighting with this issue since century where graphic warnings have not been fully accepted by the government. Therefore, Food and Drug Administration intentions are to put 6 graphic pictures showing effects of smoking such as, a man exhaling cigarette smoke through a tracheotomy hole in his throat or an infant surrounded by cigarette smoke or two pictures of a healthy lung and an ill lung and many more. Ultimately, graphic warnings should be required on cigarette packs because it educates about health risks, decreases smoking rate in the society, and reduces attractiveness of smoking among adults and juveniles.
There is clearly no way tobacco will never be outlawed but I believe there should be tighter restrictions on age limits throughout the world, and restrictions on the materials that are used in cigarette processing. Who is just letting cigarette companies continue to poison people and cause cancer risk? Throughout my essay I will analyze the affects of cigarette use on the society of the world and the elaborate corruption that keeps cigarette companies in business.
It is clear that smoking hurts people’s health and poisons the people around them. A ban on smoking in public would provide the environment nonsmoker, decrease cancer or others health problem, and it also will reduce a number of young people influence in society.
Some would say their freedom is being taken away, however the government would be bettering the population and it would only help to better everyone. Tobacco education would be one of the most important aspects to make to ban of tobacco pass through government. The citizens need to have knowledge about why it is being taken away and how to get help to stop the addiction to fully the harmfulness (“All Things”, 2002). On the other side however, ever individual has their right of freedom. This ban of tobacco would contraindicate the right of freedom, but it would better the countries health and in the long run only help our nation live
The Tobacco Industry received quite a message from the Government of India (GOI) in 2001. The GOI planned on stopping the advertisements of Tobacco from cultural and sporting events alike, with a bill that was on the horizon of being released. The goal was to equip the Government with the tools to launch an anti-Tobacco Program and discourage adolescents from consuming tobacco products. A heated discussion sparked soon after the proposition of this decision.
Section 6 of chapter 6 in this report focuses on facilities provided by government of India like education on tobacco cessation, counter advertising in newspapers, radio and television. Meanwhile tobacco companies approaching different ways to tackle public by advertising on T.V., posters, public transport, Mobile Smoking Lounge and by giving free samples which is explained in detail in section 5. This report provides important information about the experience of Indians during banning of
In 2001, the Government of India announced that it would ban the advertisement of tobacco and tobacco products including cigarettes. The ban also included a ban on the tobacco industry 's sponsorship of athletic events. As can be imagined, this began a firestorm revolving around the ethics of the decision and whether the new ban could conceivably even be implemented.
Throughout life, we experience many conflicts of interest in ethical issues as all people have different understandings with different surroundings. There are many ethical issues for ban on tobacco advertising with the conflict of interest that pertained to government in India. In this essay, I will discuss about agreements and disagreements of the ban on tobacco advertising in India with the conflict of interest issues. Lastly, I will present my opinions on what India government should do.
Summarize the arguments in opposition of the ban on tobacco advertising in India. The fact that the product is still out there and available may
The state allows the manufacture band salenof tobacco products and yet bans the advertising of tobacco. The country collects excise revenue to alleviate the financial crunch and benefits from the sponsoring of sports and cultural events, yet they deny companies level playing field through the ban. Throughout advertising the desired to present products or services is achieved. However the aim of the government is to discourage adolescents from consuming tobacco products and arm itself with powers to launch an anti-Tobacco Program. India as a developing country has its consumption growing yet in developed countries it was dropping, hence banning adverts becoming ba first step towards discouraging smokers forgetting the impact of the decision on
In February 2001, India announced a bill that would ban Tobacco companies from advertising and sponsoring sporting events. This decision was immediately met with dissension. Many believed the government didn’t have moral grounds to make such a decision and that this action held no weight. But was this action even achievable? Would it even have the desired effect and was it even morally ethical?
Smoking is a simple process of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning tobacco, but it has deadly consequences. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is the most preventable cause of death in America today (Encarta, 2002). Until the 1940?s, smoking was considered harmless. It was at this time that epidemiologists noticed a dramatic increase in the cases of lung cancer. A study was then conducted between smokers and nonsmokers to determine if cigarettes were the cause of this increase. This study, conducted by the American Cancer Society, found increased mortality among smokers. Yet it was not until 1964 that the Surgeon General put out a report acknowledging the danger of cigarettes. The first action to curb smoking was the mandate of a warning on cigarette packages by the Federal Trade Commission (Encarta, 2002). In 1971, all cigarette advertising was banned from radio and television, and cities and states passed laws requiring nonsmoking sections in public places and workplaces (Encarta, 2002). Now in some cities smoking is being completely banned from public places and workplaces and various people are striving for more of these laws against smoking.
Before India, many developed countries like France, Finland and Norway already stepped ahead in stopping tobacco advertisement appearing on broadcast channels. Will this threaten the human being’s freedom of choice? Maybe, but very similar, cocaine was banned long ago in worldwide but no body objected it. The truth is, the government has right to carry on decisions that are widely accepted as for the god sake of the citizens. Direct and indirect smokers are both influenced by the cigarette. “According to the WHO, tobacco accounted for over 3 million deaths in 1990, the figure rising to over 4 million deaths in 1998” but there is impossible to stop people from consuming it because it’s considered as a legal drug. There is a fear that teenagers and young children would begin to smoke early if they know about it, hear about it. It’s very true that children now watch television a lot and are affected by what they see on the screen. A new toy, new fashion trend, new movie, new song – they surely want to try – and no doubt tobacco would be one of the “new thing” to experiment. Another reason is the cost for health care would exceed the contribution to the GDP. “In India, analyst estimated that cigarette contributed only 0.14% of the GDP and the health costs roughly translated to 0.21 % of the GDP”. The final reason is after conducting some researches on Norway, Finland, New Zealand and France, the result came positive. The consumption of
Most controversial debate is going on public smoking ban. The reason is simple, smoking ban affects directly all people rapidly and we can see its effects in a short-term period. There have been a lot of arguments brought up both in favour and against a public smoking ban. Some of the arguments in favour are the following. Smoking ban is one of the controversial ways for reducing smoking and recognizing non-smokers’ right to health protection. The health risks of smoking are clear. Passive smoking does carry risks. Many leading medical and scientific organizations recognize second hand smoke as a cause of a range of life-threatening conditions. The health situation could be drastically improved if one of the risk factors - tobacco - was eliminated. People have a right to protect themselves from smoke inhalation. People shouldn’t have to inhale the ill-effects of other people’s smoking. The creation of smoke-free public places also improves air quality.
Consequently, tobacco which contains many harmful chemicals damages human beings’ health day by day. Although people are aware of the bad effects of smoking, they still smoke for one reason or another. When the current situation is considered, it is clear that smoking which has been spreading all over the world is not only the problem of a country or a territory but the problem of mankind because smoking brings many disadvantages for humans like diseases. I personally believe that it is important to help children remain lifelong non-smokers because they are our hope for a non-smoking future.
