... middle of paper ...

One of the most changed aspects of golf has been the evolution of the golf ball. Back in 1910, Golf Illustrated reported, “If the carrying power of golf balls is to be still further increased, all our golf courses will be irretrievably ruined as a test of the game…” The USGA has since placed regulations on the golf ball. In 1932, a weight and size restriction was put in effect with ...

The game of basketball is a highly recognized and widely known sport. Basketball was first heard of in the winter of 1891 when a man by the name of James Naismith was told to instruct a physical education class at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was instructed to put together a game for young men to enjoy while they were at the YMCA. While trying to come up with a brilliant and fun game for these young men, Naismith reminisced back on his childhood in Canada. He remembered a game his friends and him had played all the time: “Duck on a Rock”, which involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. Naismith also remembered watching a game of rugby going on in the gymnasium. The game of Rugby involved tossing a ball into a box. After a very short time of trying to make up a game for these young men, Naismith came up with a brilliant idea. Little did he know the game that he came up with just so happened to be one of he most renowned sports in American history. Naismith’s idea pertained to nailing up raised boxes so that players could attempt to throw a ball in the basket. When there were no boxes too be found, he used peach baskets. Supposedly, Naismith came up with all the rules for this game in no more than “about an hour”, according to Alexander Wolff. Shortly after Naismith had invented the game of basketball, graduates of the YMCA traveled internationally which is the main reason as to why this sport is so widely known. The impact basketball has made on the lives of many Americans is incredible in the sense that it has given people the ability to ...

Balls are considered their entertainment: “The society goes to a football game or basketball game, that’s their entertainment. You know a ball is ours, we prepare for a ball. We may spend more time preparing for a ball then anyone spends preparing for anything else. You know a ball is like our world…The ball to us is as close as to reality as we are gonna get to all to all of that fame and fortune and stardom and spotlights.” (Paris is Burning). To queer people, they are not really afforded the opportunity to become famous especially during the 1970’s and 80’s. A ball is such a sophisticated event that it is the only thing I know that can elegantly diss someone and do it in a dancing form. This form of dancing is called voguing which “came from shade because it was a dance that two people did because they didn’t like each other and instead of fighting they would dance it out on the dance floor and whoever did the better moves was throwing the best shade basically” (Paris is Burning). These events can get quite competitive and often lead to fights which helps give it such an attractive reason for people to go there. It could be described as “a war on the floor…like world war 3” (Paris is Burning). Another popular word used in balls is “shade” meaning insults. Instead of fighting you could throw “shade” at them and it would depend on if you had a good “read” of that
With this discovery, Phil Young persuaded Fred Bommer, to “head up the Acushnet Golf Division” (Titleist Story - Titleist.com. (2016). They set out to develop the highest quality and best performing golf ball in the world; one that would be uniform and consistent in quality, ball after ball. A trait that is still found within the Titleist brand (Titleist Story - Titleist.com. (2016).
Good “feel,” (high resilience), high abrasion resistance and high spin are the desirable quantities that offered by the modern ball compared to previous golf ball.
Just as the balls provided a home for those who are considered minorities in society, they united people of all races. One subject in the film described the concept of “throwing shade.” He described that instead of using offensive slurs, they would make humorous comments to each other. Participants poked fun at each other 's style or appearance, and sometimes physically competed through voguing. Although the subjects exchanged these jestering remarks, they did not discriminate based on race or ethnicity. Balls were a place of acceptance for all and preserved that value regardless of a person’s
Did you know that there are 800 million players worldwide who play volleyball at least once a week every week. In 1895 William G. Morgan created the game volleyball for the people who could not keep up with the fast pace of other sports. Soon following, in 1900 the special ball was perfected for the sport, the volleyball. Since 1900 the game has had many changes and so has the ball itself. In this essay I will be telling you about some cool history, interesting facts about how volleyballs are made and some of the weird materials.
