Just imagine standing on your big toe for two hours! This is basically what it is like to do a ballet pointe class. Ballet is a type of dance that is probably the most callous style of dance to do. Most people view ballet as looking really accessible. That assumption is completely erroneous. Ballerinas just want to make ballet look effortless, when in fact ballet requires so much skill, focus, time, and strength. As a ballerina one must think about pointing their feet, aligning their hips, staying in balance, keeping their head up, holding their arms, and so much more. According to a 1975 study done of 61 physical activities conducted by Dr. James A. Nicholas , ballet ranked number one as the most physically and mentally demanding! Ballet requires lots of training just like any other sport. A person cannot just decide one day they was to be on the Boston Celtics, one must work hard to be on any sport team. Ballet is exactly the same. Ballet requires so much strength just like any other sport. One might not notice but ballet can relate to many different sports. For example many of the same muscle groups are used in ballet and football. Both require fitness, strength, and balance! Believe it or not, even similar injuries can be found between football players and ballet dancers! However Ballet does not just relate to football; ballet relates to hockey because ballerinas and hockey player both must have balance and strength in their legs and arms. Ballet and basketball are similar because they both require jumping and working as a team. Just because ballet is more graceful than other sports doesn't make it less of a sport. Golf and Basketball are completely opposite and they are still both sports. Ballet has more similarities with all different types of sports and still is not considered one! In the definition of a sport is says “...team competes against another or others for entertainment.” This is exactly what ballet does! Ballet can be performed individually or as a team. Most commonly it is performed as a team. Competitions take place all over the world and there are many expensive ballet shows. Most ballet is performed to be viewed. Ballet is one hundred percent watched for entertainment and ballet can be competitive. Now, most people say that ballet is not competitive therefore it is not a sport. This is incredibly false. There are tons of ballet competitions such as International Ballet Competition, New York International Ballet Competition, Prix de Lausanne, Youth America Grand Prix. These competitions are incredibly competitive and are watched for entertainment. Ballet can either be competitive or watched for fun and not competitive. This is the same as any other sport! Some sports are taken super competitively while other can not be taken so competitively. Plus karate is considered a sport and karate is not really that competitive. Ballet is competitive and is watched for entertainment this meets both of the standards for being a sport so why is it not considered a sport?
