There are many different kinds of religions out there in the world. What we hear is what we know. When we hear religion, the five basic ones come to mine. Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam are the ones we hear in the United States. Have we ever heard of Baha’i? I know I haven’t and I’m sure if I was to ask someone, they would look at me crazy. Believe it or not, Baha’i is a religion.
This monotheistic religion is the youngest independent religion in the world. It was founded in the mid nineteenth century by the Great Mirza Husayn Ali. He was the son of a government minister in Iran (Cole 25). His name too many people is known as Baha’u’llah. He is the most recent in line of the Messengers of God.
The term Baha’i is used to represent the Baha’i faith or signify a follower if Baha’u’llah. It is estimated that there are five to six million Baha’i people around the world in more than two hundred countries (Bahaism 67). The Baha’i population has increased tremendously and has multiplied throughout the globe. The largest Baha’i communities are found in India, Iran, Africa, and Latin America. It also has more than two thousand different ethnic and tribal groups. Baha’i teachings were thought through major world religions.
Bahia’s believes God created all things in the universe. The existence of God and the universe is eternal, without beginning or end. God is seen as conscious of creation through messengers. Bahai’s also believe God is too great for humans to comprehend or to create an accurate image of and that human understanding of God is through revelation through his Manifestations of God (Collins 96). The Baha’i communities all gather at the beginning of each month at a meeting known as a Feast for Worship, consultation and socializing (Collins 96). The Baha’i week consists of seven days, with each day also named after an attribute of God. Baha’i observe eleven Holy Days throughout the year, with work suspended on nine of them. These days celebrate important anniversaries in the history of the religion.
This is a distinctive religion. They have their own beliefs just like any other religions. The Baha’i religion also bases its aspects on other religions. Their way of seeking partners and marrying them is interesting. They even have their own calendar. Every religion is unique in its own way. The Baha’i faith is just one of many religions in this world.
