The book I read was Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari. Modern Romance is a nonfiction book that goes into detail about love and relationships. Love is something that everyone in their life experiences and Ansari really wanted to examine what that means in more depth compared to his stand-up comedy shows. In most of his shows, he reads an audience member’s texts to whoever they are currently pursuing, and gives advice to that person while interviewing them about their life. For this book, he did this on a much larger scale, by interviewing hundreds of people across the globe, talking to experts about certain aspects of love and relationships and giving advice based on the topics that are talked about. In one of the chapters, Aziz discusses cheating in relationships. Through his research, he found out that France is the most tolerant to cheating out of the world and countries in the Middle East are the least tolerant. From this fact, he brought up the topic of how open relationships are becoming more popular to the rise in infidelity. Online dating was mainly talked about a due to the fact that it is a very clear example of what modern relationships entail. Tinder was primarily mentioned due to the fact that you can instantly reject someone on the app without the person knowing it and the appeal that makes it seem almost like a game. Dating sites were also talked about because of the way you might approach someone online vs. in real life. In addition, the whole idea of having a social media life vs the physical one you possess was heavily discussed. With the rise of internet dating, there is a rise of use in Middle Eastern countries due to the amount of arranged marriages that still happen and the unhappy people that are in them. One of the most important topics that was discussed is “emerging adulthood” which is the time between when someone would graduate school and get married. People are now getting married later, on average at 32
