Azerbaijan, located within the Caucasus region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, was characterized by CultureGrams in 2013 as having a mild climate and great wealth potential (1). After gaining political independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the country has made significant progress in terms of economic, political, and human development issues. By virtue of its status as a developing country, Azerbaijan strongly desires to improve its standing and respectability in the eyes of the international community. One of the outlets through which Azerbaijan aspires to accomplish this goal pertains to international sport, or more specifically the hosting of the quadrennial Summer Olympic Games, a process overseen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC has twice rejected the Olympic bids of Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku over the last decade, but the city refuses to give up as evidenced by a statement from Konul Nurullayeva, CEO of Baku’s 2020 bid committee, claiming that the city’s bid in 2024 “will be even more convincing” (Baku 1). In spite of critics who vilify Azerbaijan for its unresolved human rights issues, the IOC should give Baku the opportunity to host the 2024 Summer Olympics because of Azerbaijan’s flourishing economy and commitment to progress as well as Baku’s key existing infrastructure.
Understanding the makeup and growth of Azerbaijan’s economy requires knowledge of the geopolitical negotiations surrounding the oil reserves of the Caspian Sea. Factors that are involved in determining a country's HDI are gross domestic production per capita, life expectancy at birth, adult literacy, and the number of persons enrolled in educational institutions. In 1975, Peru's Human Development Index was 0.643. By 2003, the Human Development Index had risen more than one tenth to 0.762. Since the first Olympic Games in 1896 winning the Olympics meant more than just a medal, it showed the power that the winning country possesses. Although the Olympics are meant to show peaceful amiability between all counties, geopolitics is still a factor in the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee President states “sport can only contribute to development and peace if it’s not used as a stage for political contest, have the courage to address your disagreements in a peaceful direct political dialogue and not on the backs of athletes.” Many historians ask if geopolitics was a factor in the Olympics during the Cold War era. The answer isn’t an opinion; geopolitics has never been absent in the Olympics and that is especially true for the Cold War. The Cold War was a battle for political power that will dominates the rest of the world. The idea that this was a battle for power explains the arms race, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Logically, this need to upstage the opposing super power leaked into international sports competition. With all this competition whirling around during the Cold War, the Olympics became a literal race against communism or democracy. As geopolitics played such a major role in the Olympics during the Cold War era, athletes’ fates were ultimately altered.
Brazil is unarguably, to an extent, an extremely fast-growing economy. The country has overcome boom after bust in the economy and has now made it into the vision of other first world countries as a nation that is no longer “developing.” Though Brazil has overcome hyperinflation, military leaders, slavery, and many more issues in the past few centuries, the country is becoming more and more known for its economy and that the country is no longer exclusively just agricultural. This economy has given the world, and the International Olympic Committee, hope in the future of the country, and has allowed the IOC to award the 2016 Olympics to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Though the economy may prosper after the Olympics, the Brazilian government has other issues at hand to deal with that should have been prioritized before wanting to host the Olympics. Although there are many cases for the country to grow economically from hosting the Olympics, the government of Brazil should have taken care of many issues, such as the poor distribution of wealth, education systems, and other areas of infrastructure, before looking to host the Olympics, and these issues will hurt the country long after the Games are over.
The Olympics is a mega sport event which is presented once every four years and it has become a golden opportunity for hosts to emerge as a strong country. Hosting the Olympics is a big thing for every country and they receive worldwide attention from the preparation period until the actual event. However, hosting the Olympics comes with heavy stakes and experts tend to argue about the appropriateness for the countries to host it. There may be people who oppose with hosting the Olympics, however, the country rebranding, the economy hike and also the pride and patriotism of citizens just demonstrate the need of hosting the Olympics for the development of the country.

Introduction Today, the Olympic Games are the world's largest pageant of athletic skill and competitive spirit. They are also displays of nationalism, commerce and politics. Well-known throughout the world the games have been used to promote understanding and friendship among nations, but have also been a hotbed of political disputes and boycotts. The Olympic games started thousands of years ago and lasted over a millennium.. The symbolic power of the Games lived on after their demise, and came to life again as the modern Olympic Games being revived in the last century. Both the modern and Ancient Olympics have close similarities in there purpose and in there problems.
The topic that I have selected for my chapter evaluation essay is that of “Economic Development”. This paragraph above is the best summary of the chapter’s contents. In this chapter the author discusses the influence of development on the three worlds of countries. These worlds are benchmarks set to assess countries economic states relative to each other.
The greatest athletes of all time have their names set in stone. Every year a new star comes out of the shadows and becomes the focus of global interest. Nations back their athletes financially to ensure they receive a medal. Winning gold in the Olympics Games is seen as the highest honor an athlete can achieve because of its prestigious image. The Olympics have not always been about the athletes. Nations competing have been victims of political scandals. When one country goes against another country, some people do not only view it as a fight for gold, but as a war amongst nations. Soccer fields have become battlegrounds and players, soldiers. Swimming pools turn into bloodbaths, and tennis court nets as do territorial partitions. Since the early 1900s, governments have used the Olympics to prove that their nation is superior by spending more on athletic ability, more on Olympic stadiums, and more on defeating their rivals. At times, athletes can be pushed so far that they collapse under the pressure of chasing for gold. All of the above will be discoursed from a financial, political, and historical point of view.
In 1894 the Modern Olympic Games were created in order to gain back popularity for France that was lost during the Franco-Prussian War but since then countries have found themselves slipping into the Political Olympics. In 777 B.C. the Ancient Olympics were created in order to show the athletic abilities and the evolution of humans and to encourage peace among the cities of Greece. The Modern Olympics were created in the late 1800’s in order to redeem France after their loss in the Franco-Prussian War, since that point the Games have been politically motivated. The Olympics bring increased public attention and publicity to the country hosting them. China, Germany, and Russia along with many other countries have used this to their advantage throughout the years. Political issues between countries around the time of the Olympics have an effect on the Games, despite attempts to keep the two separate. The Olympics serve as the perfect opportunity for countries to demonstrate where they stand on certain political conflicts. Since the beginning of the Modern Olympic Games the focus has been less on athletic ability and more on political disputes and gaining prestige causing countries to abuse the Olympics by hosting them only for the political advantage, turning them into a political battlefield filled with boycotts and discrimination.

I hope that Kazakhstan will strongly commit further progressive development of democracy, with an emphasis on decentralization, anti-corruption, and gender equality.
