Cars today have many complex computer systems in addition to the standard mechanical parts in older vehicles; Auto mechanics today must be certified and knowledgeable technicians to solve any repair issues with a vehicle. Buying an automobile is necessary. Humankind has to get around in some way or another and buying an automobile would be the best choice as it is one of the quickest and most efficient ways of transportation. But eventually after a couple of months or years, you may start to notice that your car is making an odd sound or it does not run the way it is supposed to. An auto mechanic would be the best person to call to help with this problem.

The flat rate system was a system created so that employees could not decide how many hours they could work or how much they could get paid. For example before the great depression mechanics got paid twenty dollars per car, so if they had 5 cars a day they would get paid one hundred dollars but with the flat rate system they could do 10 cars every day and only get paid thirty dollars a day. The flat rate system was created so that companies would not go bankrupt having to pay their employees and so that companies could abuse their employees by not having to pay them so much money. Eventually mechanics found a loop hole; they began to charge customers double than what they would usually charge them. Another reason that the flat rate system was created was so that mechanics would not be getting paid for slaking off or doing random task so they could get paid. It is also a food chain, the large manufacturing companies charge a lot of money to the dealers for parts and they dealer does not pay the mechanic what they should be getting paid. When the owners of auto shops got used to the flat rate system they hired many mechanics because the owners knew that they would pay a flat rate. If the shop had many mechanics and the shop was busy the owner would be making the maximum profit due to the low pay for mechanics.
The simple car that was easy to fix with some simple tools have now become as complex as a supercomputer on wheels. Most people today have decided that automobiles of today are too complicated and just send their cars to a professional for repairs. As of January 2013, the average age of a vehicle operating on the roads today is 11.4 years old. (Associated Press, 2013). People are holding on to their cars a lot longer than in the past. Although, some claim that it is because today’s cars last longer. There is no doubt that today’s economy is also playing a part in the public’s reluctance to part with their older vehicles. However, cars will always need repairs.
Fordism changed American industrial and consumer in many ways such as Henry Ford developed new techniques of car manufacturing and marketing that made it easier for ordinary American citizens to try themselves. After three years of establishing his company “Ford Motor Company” in 1905, Ford introduced to the American people “Model T” for which was a light-weight vehicle that can handle to cruise the country’s poorly maintained roads. Automobiles have drastically evolved since they first came out in the 1880s.Automobiles have vastly changed since the 1880s to the 1920s. Henry Ford and Karl Benz played an enormous role into the making of the present day automobile. During the 1880s, automobiles used and engine called the internal combustion engine, and in the 1920s, automobiles used the external combustion engine. Lastly, during the 1880s to the 1920s, there were different model types of automobiles that were invented during that time. From the 1880s to the 1920s, automobiles became faster and more sturdy because the work of Karl Benz and Henry Ford, resulting in the present day automobile.
After the steam engine was created in the early 17th century, many people and companies tried to take that same technology and apply it to automobiles. Nobody was successful until a British inventor by the name of Richard Trevithick created a multi passenger automobile that ran on a power source that was driven by a steam-propelled piston at high pressure (Bellis). Up until the mid 1900’s cars were only produced by specifically skilled blacksmiths, and were very expensive. There were only about 4,000 cars produced from the 1890’s to mid 1900’s (Bellis).
The First production of the Model T came out on October 1, 1908 at the Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit. (www.hfmgv.org) At the time the Model T was going for a price around $850 and by the Twenties a newer model could be bought for at a price of $275.(Gordon) Although having a Model T, was a sign of wealth, it was awfully cheaper than other cars being manufactured by the other manufactures. The Model T was different from all other cars being made at the time because Ford found a way to make his car affordable. The Low Price of the Model T sent a boom around the nation. Diesel Mechanics is a good field to to study and go into. The reason being is because everything you do or everything you buy or even get delivered to your house has something to do with diesel. Diesel trucks like tractor trailers are one of the main delivery systems in the world so someone has to know how to work on that if one of those trucks breaks down. Even though diesel motors are not as popular right now they are coming up fast and more and more people are wanting these kinds of trucks. Which means that diesel mechanics has a bright future in making more money and becoming more popular. By the year 2020 most cars in America and the world will be diesel which means more job opportunity and more money.

The image of a self-propelled vehicle dates back around the early thirteenth century. Europe is the birthplace of the automobile, but it was adopted by America. Roger Bacon had a vision of cars being made without animals so they can be at astonishing speeds and maneuverability . About three hundreds years later, Leonardo Da Vinci rejuvenate Bacon's idea with hopes of creating a military vehicle. His idea was transformed into the modern day tank. The first step in making a self-propelled vehicle was taken by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot. He was an eighteenth century French artillery officer. "In 1769 he built and ran a three-wheeled carriage mounting a steam engine of his own design, with the idea that it might be used for pulling guns"2. It was very clumsy vehicle that was shot into the air when it reached the top speed of three miles an hour. Cugnot's vehicle provided almost no improvement of the horse. In the early years of the nineteenth century an American and British duo had began an automotive experiment. Richard Trevithick, a British engineer, and American genius, Oliver Evans created a workable but crude vehicle propelled by steam3. This early experiment was an improvement, but the railroads and stagecoach companies joined together. With this new combining of forces the new steam vehicle, the Orkuter Amphibolos, was brought down.
He looked through hundreds of books on bicycles and books on horse and buggies. Ford decided to use wheels from a bicycle, and the same steel framing. From the horse and buggy, he took the idea of the shape of the actual frame. He also made a handlebar that was in the same place as horse rider for a buggy. When Henry For opened his first automobile plant, not only did it bring much attention to the industry, but it also made people want to own a car so that they looked “cool”. People knew that this was going to be a successful industry so they wanted to work in it. Even though most people think that the first true car ever made by Henry Ford was the Model A; they are actually being deceived. Henry Ford’s first actual cars were made for racing. Only a year or so later did Ford start making Model A’s.
By 1899 Ford created a more proper looking motorcar with the help of wealthy businessman William Murphy. It had high wheels, a padded double bench, brass lamps, mud guards, and a "racy" look. In the same year Ford founded the Detroit Automobile Company. Within 3 years Ford had built an improved, more reliable Quadricycle, using a four-cylinder, 36 horsepower-racing engine. In 1901 his car beat what was then the world's fastest automobile in a race before a crowd of eight thousand people in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The publicity he received for this victory allowed Ford to finance a practical laboratory for refining his auto ideas. In 1903 Ford launched his own car company, The Ford Motor Car Company, and by January 1904 he had sold 658 vehicles. By 1908 he built the famous Model T, a car that was affordable to the middle class. The automobile was no longer the toy of the rich.
The Invention of The Automobile The first automobile was invented in Europe, however the automobile industry had an enormous favorable impact on the United States economy. Brown & Co. 329) There was not one specific person who "invented the automobile," but, there were many people who contributed to the invention of the automobile. (Ingrassia, 5) (Boyne, 31) These people include Isaac Newton, who developed a power carriage in the fourteen twenties, and Joseph Cugnot, who built the first steam powered automobile in seventeen sixty nine.
There are times when you find yourself in a fix, with the car suddenly dying on you, while on the way to work. To your dismay, you realized that it’s out of warranty, but you still need to have it fixed immediately, as it is your only means of transport. You did the next best thing, and have it towed towards the nearest repair shop to get an estimate of repair. The mechanic calls later, to give you a litany of parts that needs to be replaced and repaired. The list seemed endless, and you get shock by the amount involved that you have to shell out. You then wonder if the mechanic is just trying to swipe a few bucks from you, since you don’t understand anything about cars.
So what was the original thinking behind the car? Well to get a person and their family from point A to point B in a faster time than a horse. And it has evolved greatly ever since, even starting to loop back to Edison’s original plan for an electric car. So its safe to say that that the automobile is one of, if not, the most influential inventions on the United states.
With convenience comes cost. There are many costs associated with owning a car. Firstly learning to drive can be prohibitive, with lessons often out of a lot of peoples budgets. Once you have passed your test buying a car can also prove expensive. It is often the case we have to buy cheap second hand cars as new cars are very expensive. Sometimes this is fine and you can have a reliable car, but other times you pick one up that’s not been well maintained and can cost you a fortune in repairs and keeping it on the road.
