Through evidence-based design research one can gain the fundamentals of investigation that is crucial in interior design. The topic of Autism Spectrum Disorder is what my research is based upon. After looking through case studies and conducting research I can formulate ideas and concepts I can include within my design to make it most successful for the user group. Once receiving the focus of my research there are other factors that I must write about, such as the design tactics used within residential design, how universal design effects residential design, what autism is and how to appropriately design for someone on the spectrum. People come in all shapes and sizes with a range of abilities and disabilities so it is crucial to consider currant as well as future needs. I plan to incorporate universal design into my plan in a variety of ways, as the home needs to be functional not only for the child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but the rest of the family. Through a case study conducted by The Institute for Human Centered Design I was able to gather some resourceful information as to how I, as the designer, can incorporate universal design into the residence. The architect Sandra Perito designed the Taubate House in Sao Paulo, Brazil (UD Case Study,2003). Her vision is inspiring as she focused on designing a home that was functional for a family that is raising young children and goes beyond by including universal design elements that support occupants throughout their entire lifespan within the home. The designer considered all aspects of usability to meet the goals of universal design, and paid careful attention to keep the design aesthetically pleasing. The home is accommodating to a family of five throughout all stages of life, which eliminates costly renovations in the future as it is already equipped for those aging-in-place. Perito made sure to separate both private and social dwelling spaces on separate floors except for a bedroom on the main level to accommodate those who may not be able to navigate the stairs. Per the Autism Speaks no two cases of autism are the same, due to different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. ASD tendencies tend to appear around the ages of 2 and 3 years of age. The earlier a child can be evaluated the earlier specialists can intervein and improve the outcomes. The Center for Disease Control estimates autism prevalence in 1 in 68 children in the United States. Noticeably the indication is more prevalent in boys, as 1 in 42 are diagnosed and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed. One third of people with autism remain non-verbal, another third with autism have an intellectual disability.
