Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives. In 1943, Leo Kanner observed eleven children, each with similar behavioral patterns, and published a paper in which he stared,” The condition differs markedly and uniquely from any reported so far” (Miller). Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism gets its name from the Greek word “autos,” meaning self. This referred to an isolation or disconnect from the rest of the world. Many individuals who have been diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder have been described as withdrawing from the exterior world to their own world. They tend to display behavior that avoids engaging with people, eye contact, and have anxiety around others. As the awareness and rates have increased, researchers have been seeking an explanation as to the cause as well as treatment for a disease that until recently was very misunderstood.
