Autism is a developmental disability that typically involves delays and impairment in social skills, language, and behavior (“Advice for Parents of Young Autistic Children, 2012”). Being as though autism is a spectrum disorder, it affects people differently. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder Fact Sheet, 2015”). Some children and adults with ASD are fully able to perform all activities of daily living while others require substantial support to perform basic activities. Children with autism have trouble with communication. Understanding what other people think and feel is troubling for autistic children. As an Autistic child, it makes expressing yourself through words, gestures, facial expressions, and touches very hard. Some children may have speech, whereas others may have little or no speech (“Advice for Parents of Young Autistic Children, 2012”). Less severe cases may fit the DSM-IV criteria for Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). (“Advice for Parents of Young Autistic Children, 2012”) The first three years of life are crucial to a child’s development (“About Autism, 2015”). It is the first three years of life when autism usually appears. The American Academy of Pediatrics is now recommending that the 18- and 24-month well check-up also include developmental screening for autism spectrum disorder (ASDs) for all children. The first signs of autism can sometimes be detected as early as 18 months (“About Autism, 2015”). Currently, the average age of diagnosis in the United States is between 3 and 6 years of age, though some children are being diagnosed as young as 2 (“About Autism, 2015”).
