In the 19th century, a man by the name of Leo Kanner was a pediatric psychiatrist who discovered and described the features of Autism. Today, Autism is known as a disorder that is affecting many children around the world at an alarming rate with no signs of slowing down. Autism is one of the five pervasive development disorders. Autism is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs speech and critical thinking and affects physical behavior. Children from birth to the age of three may be showing signs that he or she will contain the disorder.
The symptoms or clinical features that arise from autism are seen through non-verbal and physical behavior, lack of peer-to-peer relationship, and speech impairment. Nonverbal signs can be when a child is gazing at an object or long periods of times, staring at a person with eye-to-eye contact with no response and having no eye contact with a person. Physical behavior can be seen as doing repetitive actions as repeating words or phrases others say, needs to be assisted to join in on activities, and doing strange behavior such as, moving arms back and forth at random times. Lack of peer relationships can be when they are having difficulties building a friendship with other kids at older ages because of the autistic child’s physical behavior. This may cause the autistic child to be seen as awkward and weird leading the child to be isolated from other kids. Lastly, having difficulties pronouncing words, not being able to speak correctly, unable to express his or her needs, weakens speech, vocabulary is limited, and tone of voice sounds different are shown in impaired speech.

... more prone to have Autism than females, showing a 4:1 ratio. In 1999, the population genetics increase to 1 in every 1,000 children born. The next increase in diagnoses was in the year 2008 when statistics showed that 40 to 60 out of 1,000 children had Autism. Currently in the year 2014, statistics are showing that 1 in every 68 births, a child will be diagnosed with autism.
Lastly, no cure has been established for Autism because of the complexity of several genes being involved and environmental factors playing a role. For now, therapy sessions and medications are suggested for parents who have autistic children. Therapy sessions that are available are in behavior, building social skills, verbal therapy to help with speech difficulties and relationship development. Medication is only used to help treat emotional symptoms such as anxiety, sadness, and depression.
There is no cure for autism. However, therapies and prescribed medicines can help reduce your child’s symptoms so your child can
In 1968, the APA referred to autism as a single disorder, and now it is known to be a syndrome of behavioral and medical effects. Along with autism, several related disorders are grouped under Pervasive Developmental Disorders, PDD, a general category ...
Autism was first discovered by Leo Kanner in 1943, he labeled it as early infantile autism. Most causes of autistic children before Kanner’s discovery were thought to be possessed and were put through very inhumane conditions. Autism is the prototypical form of a spectrum of related, complex, neuro developmental disorders referred to as autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs), also known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) (Berry 73). The main symptom of Autism is the inability to easily communicate and interact with others. A cure for autism has not been discovered, but there are reports of some children that have naturally recovered. Symptoms are noticed in early years of life, normally around the age of three. The onset of the disease must be before the age of three years (Berry 73). The families with an autistic child have to adjust their daily activities around the child at all times. It is very difficult for an autistic child to be in a crowded area or in new environments.
In 1943, Leo Kanner observed eleven children, each with similar behavioral patterns, and published a paper in which he stared,” The condition differs markedly and uniquely from any reported so far” (Miller). Although many cases of autism, and autism-like disorders appeared before throughout history, no one ever properly defined this disorder until Kanner’s paper. The first said to mention the word autism was Martin Luther during the Protestant Reformation, while describing a severally autistic boy, but this is a doubted speculation. The first to medically coin the term autism was Hans Asperger. Even though, he thought he was observing autism, he was actually observing and describing Asperger Syndrome, which doctors realized was a different disorder in 1981 (“Who discovered Autism?”).
The Autism Spectrum is a mystery. With no cause or cure, researchers have been working hard, to the best of their abilities, to diagnose, treat, and educate those with autism. For centuries, since 1943, with enhanced technology, the view on autism has improved tremendously. New advancements have been developed to diagnose autism earlier, help create more successful treatments, and to help better an educational plan for people with autism.
In 1943, a man by the name of Leo Kanner formally identified autism; he labeled the disorder ?autistic disturbance of affective contact? (?Autism Web? n.d.). Autism was first described in America, officially, in 1980 with the publication of DSMIII (Tanguay, Robertson, Derrick, 1980). There was much confusion, both before and after Kanner's description, regarding the continuity of autism with schizophrenia and other then-recognized forms of psychosis (Lippcott/Williams & Wilkins, 1999). Kanner noticed that autistic infants had a reverse pattern typically observed in normal infants.
The most distinct feature of autism is impaired social interaction. Children with autism may fail to respond to their names and often avoid looking at other people. Such children often have difficulty interpreting tone of voice or facial expressions and do not respond to others' emotions or watch other people?s faces for cues about appropriate behavior.
Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.
Autism is a genetic disorder that typically appears during the first three years of life. There has been five chromosomes thought to be directly connected to autism. The disorder is a complex developmental disability. Autism is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain functions, affecting development of the person’s communication and social interaction skills. There are many different ways to classify autism; by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and repetitive behavior. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development, however most signs of autism become obvious around two and three years old. According to the U.S Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention about 1 and 68 American children are diagnosed with Autism. Studies have showed that autism is four to five times more common in boys than girls. Which is an estimated 1 out of 42 boys are diagnosed with it compared to an estimated 1 out 189 girls are diagnosed with in the United States. Autism rates. There is many different causes linked to Autism. The two main factors that are mainly discussed are that Autism is genetically inherited and autism is established via environmental factors.
Two to six children out of every thousand will end up with Autism. Autism is one of the fastest growing disorders with a great amount of studies being put behind it. With its vast amount of different signs and symptoms, different forms, how its treated, and arguments about how exactly the disorder came to be , Austin can very well be one of the most confusing, and researched disorders, for its a disorder that stirs up tons of questions but yet gets hardly any answers. Autism is usually developed between ages of one and three, it effects communication and how the child interacts with others. It is defined by behaviors of the child and “ spectrum disorders” that re different with each person. (About Autism, 2008, para 1). Symptoms of autism can very in many different ways, and even different categories. Take the category of social interaction and relationships symptoms include : non verbal communication development problems such as , eye - to - eye gazing, body language, and facial expressions, failure to make friends with people their own age, lack of interest, and lack of empathy. The category for verbal and non verbal symptoms include : Delay or lack when learning to talk, about forty person of people with autism never speak, problems with starting, and keeping conversations, repetitive use of language, and difficulty understanding what someone is saying. Finally the category of interests and play include : unusual focus on pieces, preoccupation on certain topics, a need for the same routine, and stereotyped behaviors like hand flapping and body rocking.
Understanding autism, which is professionally known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, otherwise known as (ADS) can be a difficult task, especially for someone who is not trained in helping persons with disabilities. The first person to discover autism was a child psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. He names the spectrum disorder after the Greek word autos, meaning of or for oneself, due to the way the child display social avoidance. Many doctors’ believed in the past that autism was caused by the way the mother not caring for her child properly or ignoring him or her. There was also a time when it was thought to be caused by certain environmental stresses that cause neurological issues within the brain. Autism is one of the most misunderstood
Autism was discovered in the early 1900. It was then used to name a range of different neuropsychological conditions. The Term Autism is derived from the word “autos” that in Greek means self. This word was used because Autistic people usually keep to themselves and keep away from social interactions. The first person to use this term was a Eugen Bleuler. He was a Swiss Psychiatrist. He started this in 1911 and he used this to refer to certain symptoms from schizophrenia. The term became used in the USA in the 1940’s. It was then used by a doctor from John Hopkins University to name withdrawn behavior that he observed by children.
Autism is most common and most missed diagnosed disease. Autism is considered as a spectrum because each person have their own personal trait and characteristic. “Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult, since there is no medical test, like blood test, to diagnose the disorders. They look at the child’s behavior to make a diagnosis” (www.cdc.gov). Some parents are in denial with this disease and will not get the early intervention that could help. We need to educate as much as possible about autism. Autism is a lifelong condition and with early detection, intervention and therapy. This can help to increase skills and abilities to help children grow and reduce the symptoms cause by this

Autism spectrum disorder has become the most common neurological and developmental disorder diagnosed in children today. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2012) estimate that 1 out of every 88 American children have been properly diagnosed. There is no known cure for autism, and the inconsistencies of the symptoms of autism in each case make it difficult to target a particular set of effective treatments. However some behavior management therapies, specifically physical therapy, may help to significantly control the unwanted symptoms in young children with autism spectrum disorder.
