Autism is a global mental phenomenon that is present within the minds of many, no matter the race, gender, age, or physical health of the person. Autism is a mental illness that affects a person's mind, modifying their social contributions, work, and just everyday life making simple days a struggle. The mental illness known as autism affects all of the people with autism and the ones around them. With no cure arising in the near future, people must continue to adapt and learn how to help these people who are “different” in their own way. One outcome of these improper signals is the mental illness of autism. The brain is the powerhouse of the body, and as Stephanie Watson states, “In the brain, nerve cells transmit important messages that regulate body functions -- everything from social behavior to movement” (Watson 2). If the brain does not receive the transmission from the cells adequately, the brain is confused on what to do, often leaving the person confused, scared, or just to act on impulse which can cause many types of exterior problems. While the person struggles on the outside, the inside of brain goes into a state of recollection, attempting to gather lost data and formulate the best plan which can cause even more problems for the autistic person (Bilimoria 1). Scientists have discovered that the cerebral cortex is a common brain section that is incorrectly sending signals to the brain of the autistic person. The “damaged” brain continues to damage itself through its repairs, sometimes leading to the damage of the corpus callosum, amygdala, and the cerebellum. Science studies have shown that autism's effects can actually assist a person as much as it could potentially slow them down (American Academy of Pediatrics 2). A popular American TV show called “The Good Doctor”, is a good representation of how autism can be useful in the real world of work. The show stars the main character who is diagnosed with autism, and yet his mental illness or “gift” in his instance made him one of the best doctors in the world. This TV drama is a bit sceptical and rare, but still shows how autism can support a person in day to day working, and progress them farther than most.
