The basis of authentic trust in leadership A leader can’t simply say – trust me, trust takes time to build. People trust us when they see some value in us. When we take care of others, sacrifice something, show value to something, or do something for others? Its then we are valued by others and trust is gained from it. Authentic leadership relies on persuasion and persuasion relies on trust. For the organization trust is the most important asset than the brand, product, service, leader or individual combined. Leaders should embrace differences, create openness and facilitate connection in the group. When trust and authenticity are lacking in a group or a company, it will be doomed and so its growth in future. An authentic trust in leadership …show more content…
There is no doubt that effective leadership requires trust, if the organization wants to behave in virtuous and upright manner, it must maintain ethical standards and have good leadership. If the corporate encourage unethical behaviors, then it will be difficult for the employees to resist the temptation of bending the rules. The other reason for erosion can be that the accounting and auditing profession in particular needs to regain trust. People of America from last two decades have witnessed high profile scandals and in which the accountants and auditors have failed in their fiduciary responsibilities. The removal of self regulation in the auditing profession can serve as a wakeup call to all the leaders and professionals of all types. Also by using the wrong metrics the ceo’s took huge risks that maximized their pay at the expense of long term stake holders of the company. A leader should have substantial influence in creating and developing trust in his team. By studying biblical scriptures, and other authors’ recommendations, I believe below three act as important recommendations for a modern leader. Seeking god’s direction A leader must not rush ahead and make things happen, he has to spend time alone and understand god’s vision and wisdom as he plots his course. Seeking god’s directions means going on journey of –“knowing yourself”. Once his mind is clear on which path he has to take, He can walk many miles in that direction without any problem. The same thing can be applied for organization perspective. A leader must be clear on his higher values. He has to have an accurate view on his weakness and strengths. He must know when to push the button, when to calm down, be decisive and be pro active rather than react to the situation. He has to act as the situation demands, keeping goals in mind. Investing in team and its
“Do as I say, not as I do” say’s the parent to the child who is watching their every move. Leaders may not say it, but their actions show inconsistencies in their leadership. How can leaders truly be trusted is they are not willing to change themselves? How can leaders breakthrough the wall of resistance if they are not willing to engage their employees, dispel the fear factor, and allow themselves to be vulnerable?
Without hesitation, Lance announced ‘trust’ as the most valuable leadership trait in others and the leadership trait that he values above all. He further explained that without trust, few other leadership traits matter, because the lack of trust undermines leadership authenticity.
When leaders do the opposite of what they claim, it creates mistrust within the organization. To earn trust from the organization, it is important to set an example and model the way (Kouzes & Posner). People tend to words and then observe actions (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). In a leadership position it is important to commit to those promises. When promises are met, members are likely to be more motivated and appreciate the organization (Kouzes & Posner,
Lastly, the key to successful leadership is getting all of one’s followers on their side. In order to achieve this, leaders must gain all their followers trust. Bennis outlines four key elements to gain this trust. Primarily, constancy must be enforced. Leaders must stay the course. Second, congruity is essential. This is so the leaders can “walk the talk.” Third, reliability is needed so that leaders are present when it matters most. Lastly, leaders honor their commitments through integrity. All of these important, aspects gain the trust of their followers by their side.
The four ways leaders gain credibility from followers are, Ownership, Inspiration, Commitment, and Respect. Each of these allow a leader to show off their skills in many ways allowing them to be one with their followers. To be able to gain respect and inspire others, means a leader is able to connect with their followers. To commit to the work means they work with their followers, and to be an owner of their own actions allows them to accept their mistakes and learn from them, teaching followers in a new way.
In an effort to understand the questionnaire, one must first understand the definition of an Authentic Leader. Genuine, trustworthy and reliable are a few words that are interchangeable with the term authentic. Authentic leaders exhibit qualities of confidence, transparency, and high moral standard and are usually very confident (Gardner, Avolio, Luthans, May and Walumbwa, 2005). A person that is considered to be authentic is one who taking account for their behavior and a person who is true to themselves and what they think. A quality of an authentic leader is that he/she exudes the level of authenticity through their actions that encourage others to want to behave the same way. The leader who acts in this manner believes that all individuals have something to contribute to a goal and
Trust leads to respect. Leaders must be trusted by their people. Honesty in a leader is a huge factor in how the people perceive
“Leadership, very simple, is about two things 1) truth and trust 2) ceaselessly seeking the former, relentlessly building the latter “
I also like and appreciate very much on the author’s emphasize on walking in character, integrity, humility, and obedience to the Word of God as a spiritual leader. Chapter topics include searching for leaders, insights on leadership from Paul and Peter, prayer, time, reading, improving leaders, responsibilities, tests, delegation, Nehemiah, and etc. are very important and good to not only just read but try to practice in daily leadership life.
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
Conger (1998) explains that leaders are more effective and will gain the trust of the group when they find common ground.
Trust: Mr. Ali believe that being trusted is an important value for leaders. It is not only needed by followers, staff, but also by adversaries and opponents. Even enemies need to deal with trusted leaders that can deliver on any agreement or treaty.
Second, is being supportive. Providing help, advice, and coaching makes leaders approachable which encourages greater trust (Kreitner and Kinicki, 2013). When team members come to seek out help, it is important that leaders are there with answers. When leaders serve in this capacity, it builds trust by giving people the resources and confidence they need to do their job.
Finally, leaders are able to keep everything in perspective. They invest themselves fully but also are able to keep their priorities in order. As a child I never understood anything that my mother did or said but now that I am an adult I realize that my mother had a valid reason for everything she did. My entire childhood my mother has molded me to become a great leader and all the lessons that my mother has taught me I can spread the knowledge to my children. Successful leaders keep it all in perspective because they are able to separate the important from the urgent, and devote their time
Leadership is an awesome responsibility, and regardless of where leadership occurs, followers want leadership that is trustworthy, inspiring, consequential, and most importantly, effective. Thus, effective leadership is often weighed in theory and common indicators such as the impact on a team or process, follower attitudes and perceptions, and even career longevity (Yukl, 2010). Furthermore, leadership effectiveness may also be determined by the leader’s title, position, skills, traits, and moral behaviors (Carolina College of Biblical Studies [CCBS], n.d.). Often overlooked in all these things are God’s purpose for leadership, and the call for the leader to remain obedient to God while leading (CCBS, n.d.). Since mankind is sinful by
