Australia is located on the continent Australia, because Australia is a continent as well as a country. It is located in the Western and Eastern hemispheres. This big island is bordered by the Pacific and Indian Ocean, but no countries border it. The first settlers of Australia, called Aborigines, were from what is now called Southeast Asia. The first European to discover Australia was Willem Janszoon in the early 1606. The “Commonwealth of Australia” is Australia’s official name. The states of Australia are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. There are total of 6 states on Australia.

Their government is a constitutional monarchy, which means that Australia has a constitution, but also has a monarch, which in this case is Queen Elizabeth ||. Queen Elizabeth || lives in Buckingham Palace. The prime minister (president) lives in Canberra, Australia. The government’s headquarters are located at the Parliament House of Canberra. The representatives meet also at the Parliament House of Canberra. Australia’s flag has the Union Jack (United Kingdom’s flag) on the top left corner to show that the states were once 6 British colonies. The flag has on its bottom left corner the Commonwealth Star, which of course is because Australia is the “Commonwealth of Australia.” The rest of the flag is for the Southern Cross, which was used to represent Australia.

Most Australians speak English, but people also speak Greek, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, etc. There are about 70 languages in Australia, but Australia has no official language. For a random fact, the Australian coat of arms has the kangaroo and emu on its coat of arms because they can’t move backward. That shows that Australia can only move forward in everything it does.
