Established by Nazi Germany in 1940 in the suburbs of the Polish city of Oswiecim, Auschwitz, a Nazi concentration camp, was the largest concentration camp established during the Nazi regime. The Auschwitz concentration camp complex contain three main camps called Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II , and Auschwitz III. Auschwitz became a symbol of terror and genocide because of the residential life , performed medical experiments ,and the punishments and executions given to its different types of prisoners("KL Auschwitz-Birkenau”). Moreover, Auschwitz’s prisoners included the Jews, Poles, gypsies, Soviet POWs (Prisoners of War), Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals ,and other nationalities. In addition, some prisoners at Auschwitz was classified by being marked with triangles also known as winkels. For example, political prisoners was marked with red triangles, criminal prisoners was marked with green triangles, asocial prisoners was marked with black triangles, Jehovah's witnesses was marked with purple triangles ,and pink triangles marked homosexual prisoners. Furthermore, Jewish prisoners was marked with the Star of David or a red triangle striped with yellow. At Auschwitz, all prisoners faced the same fate of death except for the those who managed to survive. It’s estimated 1.1 million prisoners died at Auschwitz in the 5 years of its existence ("Prisoner Classification System in Auschwitz") ("Auschwitz"). Moreover , prisoners in Auschwitz lived in the former Polish army barracks; which was later remodeled by the Germans When Auschwitz open the prisoner’s rooms had no furniture, but prisoners often slept on the floor with mattresses stuffed with straw.
