Carl Jung noticed that throughout history stories had heroes in them. He talked about different types of archetypes. Mr. Jung applied many different archetypes in stories, by image, theme, character type and ideas. Also that they could be used in myths, religions, literature and dreams. My perspective, of a hero, is someone who is resourceful, caring, helpful and loving. Also someone who encourages and teaches. My hero is my aunt Delaney. Aunt Delaney has been a very caring person to many people. Delaney enjoys being with many different types of people. In order to get good grades I have to try or use my time Productively. Delaney has been a great listener towards me and many people. She has been a good listener by letting me talk with her about my problems and a lot of different things. Also she has listened to her friend that has special needs and Delaney talks to her after she finishes talking with her. Also when someone has a bad day she will listen. It makes me feel good about myself when I am able to talk to someone about my good and bad days. Delaney encourages others by telling people such as me and my brother and sister. She helps me by telling me to succeed in life and expect for some bad and good things to happen. Also when I get good grades on my homework or tests she tells me to keep the good work up. I take that in consideration and listen because I know that I need to pass high school instead of staying in high school the rest of my life or dropping out like my parents had done. In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype.
The hero is typically a strong, good-natured person by Hollywood standards, but some authors take the freedom to change this definition. Authors like Flannery O 'Connor in her short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” redefine the hero with the character, Grandma. This character is usually loved by all and well respected, but Grandma is not lovable or liked. People who read the story often have a strong dislike towards her. She is annoying. O 'Connor does not follow the hero’s journey verbatim. She strives to make the reader think about their feelings towards the characters in different ways.

George cares for Lennie Smalls and Elizabeth care for her husband John, and her family. Even though Lennie and John have done some bad and immoral things in their past, George and Elizabeth still take care of them. One way they can also compare is how they make sure their loved ones are fed. Elizabeth cooks and cleans for John. In the book (“Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men”) When George and Lennie stop to camp before they go to the ranch for their job. George makes a fire and shares food with Lennie. Another similarity is that Elizabeth and George both want their loved ones to feel loved. Elizabeth wants John to feel like she is not judging him because of his affair. George does not want anyone to hurt Lennie or make fun of him. Elizabeth and George both want to protect their dignity. Elizabeth tries to protect hers and John's dignity by lying in court about the reason she fired Abigail Williams. George lies about Lennie to their boss when they first meet to protect him from saying something he may regret. The definition of a hero is dependent on that society's beliefs, laws and taboos. There are heroes for all ages and for both men and women. Heroes have had changing roles since man wrote his story, and all have been the embodiment of each society, each civilization's ideals. Basketball superstar, Michael Jordan, largely affects the children of today that are enthralled with visions of hoop dreams. He inspires the young depraved ghetto child to rise up against his unfortunate circumstances. Possessing many noteworthy qualities, all heroes possess faults because they are human and all humans possess failings. Because heroes begin to fold and make mistakes as they are suddenly thrust into the awe inspired limelight, and because their pedestals are broken and discarded as the public craves to see the dirt underneath the hero. The Hero’s Journey consists of three major parts: the separation, the initiation, and the return. Throughout a character’s journey, they must complete a physical or spiritual deed. A physical deed involves performing a daunting and courageous act that preserves the well-being of another person. A spiritual deed calls for action that improves another individual’s state of mind.

A person can be a hero for saving the life of one or of millions. Heroes are not only real people, but they are also fantasy figures. Children are extremely interested with legendary and fantasy figures because they take on such tasks as: difficult journeys, challenges with dragons, discovering lost treasure, and changing the nature of the world through their singular acts of courage and selflessness. They also endure much resistance, hardship, and danger. Often the hero learns valuable lessons about survival and self-reliance. Not only do heroes teach valuable lessons they give a child a sense of belonging. To a child, a hero is an invincible person who will change the world.
Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis. As witnessed in literature and real life, mankind needs heroes to provide an inspirational role model, an escape from the mundane, and a guide for morality.
