Augustus Leadership and The Roman Republic

INTRO: A leader who went against history and followed his instinct. Leaders are of great importance in society and hold key roles. Leaders set moral standards, maintain organization through a series of laws and reforms and are essential to a prosperous society. Augustus was the first emperor of Rome and eventually became the most powerful leader of his time. Augustus restored order in Rome, but with that came putting an end to the Roman Republic. Although the rule of Augustus ended the Roman Republic, he should be recalled as one of the great leaders of the ancient world because he led a series of economic and political reforms while establishing a time of peace and prosperity throughout the empire.
BODY I: Augustus initiated many reforms referring to a social, economic and political matter in order to improve society. One of the first revisions that he made was going over the roll of senators. He felt that was of great importance because senators represent the people. If senators do a bad job of this and do not speak or listen for the people, many problems will occur. This may include, an uprising because the people are not happy with decisions being made. This would then reflect badly on Augustus. In addition he also went over many Roman institutions. The changes he made were based on a sense of rationalism, for the good of society rather than his own personal needs. The Urban Proletariat was issued with Augustus. This refers to those of extremely low class who sell their labor in order to survive. Being established as a proletariat meant that occasionally the government would help out, and give them bread along with other things. A leader that maintains the majority of power and is untrustworthy to his people is no good, thus a good leader is one who shares power and is honest and dependable.
Conclusion: Ending the Roman Republic may have meant changing history but Augustus is not only known as the first emperor of Rome but is referred to as one of the best leaders in history due to the successes of his reforms, in addition to the peace and prosperity of his empire. Throughout forty-five years of Augustus’s rule an uncountable amount of reforms were made in order to a flourishing and stable society. Although, some may disagree with his rule at times, the end result proved that Augustus was the right ruler. After all, don’t the ends justify the means?
