This story goes around a boy with a disfigured face named August Pullman who lives in New York with his father, mother, and sister, Via. Having been homeschooled for most of his childhood, August is surprised to hear from his parents that he is enrolled for fifth grade in a local prep school called Beecher Prep. In the beginning, August is nervous about the school, but after a quick orientation with three kids who have been asked by the principal to befriend him, he looks forward to entering school for the first time. Auggie notices the kids in his class are getting tired of Julian's war against Jack. Auggie is really worried when he has to gets hearing aids, but they help his hearing a ton, and everyone is cool about them. Auggie tells one of the girls in his class a joke about his face, she suddenly realizes how funny and sweet he actually is. Auggie is really mad when he realizes that Via doesn't want him to be seen at her school. He goes to Via's play, when she gets a standing ovation, he decides that everyone should get a standing ovation at least once in a lifetime. Auggie is ecstatic when he finds out Julian isn't going on the fifth-grade nature retreat. Auggie has a blast at camp. But then on the last night of camp, Auggie and Jack head into the woods for a nature pee and have to deal with some mean seventh graders from another school. Even though the story might seem ordinary at times, it allows you to look at the big picture, which is the most important aspect. The main character-Brent- displays characteristics that a lot of high school students can relate to; whether male or female. In his cross-country adventure through the U.S., exciting and unexpected moments never cease to amuse you. All kinds of people contribute to Brent’s change of attitude; one comment or story or facial expression at a time. And possibly the best part of it all is that you get all of this educational, amusing literature in only 133 pages.

The first and most brave thing Auggie has ever gone through is having surgeries. In all of Auggie’s life, he has had 27 surgeries to correct facial anomalies; this definitely requires much bravery! Another act of bravery was when he decided to go to his new public school, Beecher Prep. This decision was very brave, since Auggie would risk being made fun of for his deformed face. In the past he was always protected by his mother, who homeschooled him, and no one could make fun of him. Going to a public school was definitely a brave step for Auggie. In addition, the middle school Auggie goes to planned to go to camp. Deciding to go on this camping trip was a remarkable decision for Auggie, since he had never slept anywhere without his parents. This was another brave choice for Auggie. Also, when he was at the camp, he and Jack left the group watching a movie when both boys needed to pee and the line for the toilets was too long. Because the lines were so long, they went into the woods to do their business. On their way back, they bumped into another group of people they did not know.
