Audio Technician: Hobby or Profession

Music is a huge passion of mine, I’m constantly listening 24/7. I don’t play any instruments and I don’t sing, but I know that I want a career that involves music, and producing it seems to be the only way that I can think of, that I would enjoy. So I want to become an audio technician, also called a sound engineer. Audio techs are basically the nuts and bolts of producing music,.they set up the equipment, are constantly adjusting the knobs, and checking the mics. They make sure everything runs smoothly and are always consulting with their artists so that they’re happy with the final outcome. To become an audio technician, there are actually no formal requirements to have any training. As long as one has a high school diploma or GED, they can study to become an audio technician through training with a professional tech. Some can self-teach themselves, especially if they’re already interested in computers and technology. But taking technology classes and music composition or theory really does help, along with learning how to play an instrument. Most people who are seeking a career path in audio or sound engineering would choose to go to a technical school or go through a year of vocational training. Many community colleges and major universities offer classes. Technical institutes typically offer the best programs that range from 9 to 12 months in length. Through them a person can earn certificates and associate's degrees in audio technology, audio production and engineering. Every job involves certain skills and abilities, depending on which engineering path a person chooses to pursue. Important skills such as listening to what others are saying, taking time to understand and comprehend what they mean and want, and asking que... ... middle of paper ... ...ic and mixing all the elements into one song. But in that session, we also mastered the tracks, meaning that all the songs were final copies and went through another process of compression and equalization and made into CD copies. My final session with Kevin at Opal Studio involved working with a brand new client, Daniel Hamm. For that session we tracked drums and bass, set up our mics and recorded the drum and bass for every song. Again, it was a very tedious process; all that’s done is watching the levels and making sure everything runs smoothly. Overall, my experience was very fun. I loved working with all the bands and artists. It’s a very social job, which is fun, but they technology killed me and a lot of it is quite tedious. I’m honestly not sure if I would actually pursue it as a career, it would be a fun hobby, but I don’t see myself doing it for a living.
