Atticus Leadership Qualities

A good leader does what is right, not necessarily what is easy. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, a man named Atticus demonstrates great leadership qualities. Atticus, a father of two young children, goes out of his way to help others throughout the story. His character shows dedication in helping others through his ethical and honest conduct, and he also demonstrates sympathy towards everyone. Throughout the novel, Atticus demonstrates morality, courage, and compassion. He always seeks to do the right thing, even to the point of risking his reputation. First, Atticus shows virtuous conduct and concern with equality through his actions. For instance, Aunt Alexandra attempts to kick out Calpurnia, the family’s black maid. Atticus defends the beloved friend’s position as he tells Alexandra, "Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to. She's a faithful member of this family and you'll simply have to accept things the way they are" (155). Additionally, Atticus defends a black man named Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping a young girl. Despite opposition or difficulty, Atticus determinedly does the right thing. This is exemplified when Atticus talks to his brother, known as Uncle Jack, about the trial. He explains, “It couldn’t be worse, Jack…The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells” (100). Though Atticus knows he has little to no chance winning the case, he still stands for defending Robinson. Atticus also shows great courage when a rabid dog walks through their town, Maycomb.
