Asthma in a Fitness/School Setting
For some, the agony of asthma may be an affliction only during childhood; for others, the illness persists throughout adulthood. The least fortunate are those who fall mortal victims. Asthma can kill. Medical science can offer only temporary relief at best. The deviousness of the disease defies almost all attempts at discovering a cure. Asthma can be mild; it can be devastating. Sometimes the symptoms disappear for many years but surface again with even greater severity.
In an asthmatic attack the diameter of the small bronchi is diminished as a result of spasm of the muscular coat, active congestion of the mucous membrane and excessive secretion of tough mucus. In inspiration the small bronchi are pulled open and the obstruction is thereby reduced. On the other hand, forced expiration tends to compress bronchi and increase the obstruction. Consequently inspiration is much easier than expiration; the difficult breathing of asthma differs in fact from all other forms of difficult breathing, in being mainly expiratory in character (Mezei, 1988). Not to be confused with asthma is a similar, but less intense, tightening of the bronchial muscles that occurs in people who are exposed to large amounts of noxious fumes, tobacco smoke, and other pollutants. The body attempts to protect itself against invasion by dangerous substances flowing into the lungs. The asthma victim, however, usually hypersensitive, overreacts with severe symptoms (Renard, 1996).
Asthma deaths in the country are steadily rising at an ever-increasing rate. Statistics indicated that about 4,000 Americans died from the disease in 1985, more than double the number only a decade ago. Society became more involved into the process of
Grant 2 determining why asthma death were increasing. A task force of immunology, chemistry, pulmonary medicine, and epidemiology researchers were charged with finding an answer, but their preliminary report only raised more questions. The rise in asthma deaths during the past decade has puzzled scientists and physicians. But while the severity of the disease appears to be increasing, many asthmatics are unwilling to lead the sedentary lives that some say their condition requires ("Asthmatics", 19XX).

...with less respiratory distress can result from involvement in competitive athletics. The coach, teacher, and parents should share a common philosophy with the child, regarding competition. They should make the child aware that winning for an asthmatic does not necessarily mean coming in first place or having more points than the opposition. For an asthmatic, winning is wheeze-free participation (Dennis, 1985).

The contraction of the inspiratory muscles increases the volume of the thoracic cavity causing the pressure within the alveoli to decrease and air to flow into the alveoli. During resting inspiration, the diaphragm, the external intercostals and the parasternal intercostals contract to stimulate inspiration. During forced inspiration the scalene and the sternocleidomastoid muscles contract to further expand the thoracic cavity. The pectoralis minor muscles also play a minor role in forced inspiration. During quiet breathing, relaxation of these muscles causes the volume of the thoracic cavity to decrease, resulting in expiration. During a forced expiration, the compression of the chest cavity is increased by contraction of the internal intercostal muscles and various abdominal
Intro: The Hippocratic Oath clearly states, “I will not give a drug that is deadly to anyone if asked [for it], nor will I suggest the way to such counsel.”Steven Miles, a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School published an article, “The Hippocratic Oath,” expressing that doctors must uphold the standards of the Hippocratic Oath to modern relevance. Euthanasia continues as a controversial policy issue. Providing resourceful information allows us to recognize what is in the best interest for patients and doctors alike. Today, I will convince you that physician-assisted suicide should be illegal. The United States must implement a policy stopping the usage of euthanasia for the terminally ill. In Alcohol: The World’s Favorite Drug, written by Griffith Edwards, the many stages, views and sides of alcohol are addressed. Not only does one see the present effects of alcohol, but one sees the history and future of alcohol, both scientifically and socially. The author’s purpose was to demonstrate that alcohol has many faces to be differentiated and it has been this way for an extensive amount of time.
Thesis Statement: Alcoholism has many effects, on the alcoholic them self, towards their family and friends, and on their health, on their spouse and children, mentally and physically, but the good thing is there is help out there for all of these people.
Most of you may not think of asthma as a killer disease, yet more that 5,000 Americans die of asthma each year. According to the Mayo Clinic web page, asthma also accounts for more that 400,000 hospital discharges annually. As the number of people with asthma increases, the more likely you are to come in contact with a person who has the disease. As far as I can remember, I have had asthma my whole life. My mother and one of my sisters also have asthma, so I have a first hand experience with it. This morning, I will discuss some interesting facts about asthma, I will specifically focus on what it is, warning signs, symptoms, causes, and the treatments that are used.
Alcohol has been the lifeblood of civilization dating thousands of years back in time, and it is clear to see the culture impact it has made throughout history. People perceive alcohol in many different ways; depending on gender, age, religious background, or social upbringing. Throughout history alcohol has affected different cultures and various demographics. It has been a source of pleasure and aesthetic in many cultures, along with being one of the oldest rites of passage, especially in modern day American society. Alcohol and drinking were also an integral part of religious observances throughout history and culture. The use of alcohol can be seen as a social lubricant, and besides being a thirst quencher, it can play a pivotal role in enhancing enjoyment and quality of life. For thousands of years alcohol has demonstrated its ability to bring people together, which proves its influential capabilities it has on culture.
Caring for an older parent involves more than buying them new clothes and giving them medicine, they have emotional needs as well as healthcare needs. This is why in many situations formal and informal care are both necessary to satisfy an older persons needs. Studies by gerontologists show that women/daughters are more likely to take on the responsibility of caring for their parent(s). (3__) The type of care and emotions arised while caring for an older parents also differs between men and women. A study confucted by Campbell and Carol (2007) on 58 adult sons showed some comm experiences and emotions. (325) Some of these
A person who experiences perpetual shortness of breath or hears a whistle-like sound in their chest when they breathe, is more than likely to have asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease/condition in which the airways in a person’s body are inflamed and produce extra mucus, which makes breathing troublesome. In addition, the bronchial tubes, passageways that allow air to enter the lungs and come back out, are narrowed, which makes it even more difficult to breathe. Breathing is essential for humans to survive and carries out important functions in our bodies. This disease is very common in the United States, about 1 in 12 people (about 25 million) have asthma, and the numbers are increasing every year.
Experts around the world have defined alcohol as a drug. For thousands of years, various civilizations and countries have been making alcohol through various fermentation techniques. It is classified as a depressant, meaning it slows down the body’s vital functions and inhibits the ability to react. Within the last ten years, it is estimated that approximately 15 million Americans suffer from alcoholism, and it is estimated over 76 million people worldwide suffer from an alcohol related illness. Alcohol abuse has many physical, emotional, and developmental effects on the human body.
Research papers on Asthma reveal that it is a chronic lung condition with ongoing airway inflammation that results in recurring acute episodes of breathing problems such as:
Various countries take opposite sides and either allow euthanasia or prohibit it. “Euthanasia, however, occurs secretly in all societies including those in which it is held to be immoral and illegal. The core of the challenge of euthanasia is ethical because human life is in stake” (Vaknin, 2). Those who argue on the legalization of physician-assisted suicide would believe that if states were to permit it, in essence, would be considered murder.
Excessive alcohol was the cause of an average of 88,000 deaths per year in the United States between 2006 and 2010 (“Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”). Excessive alcohol cost the economy $249 billion in 2010 and is the cause of death to 1 in 10 working-age adults (“Centers for Disease Control and Prevention”). These are worrisome facts that should make anyone reconsider picking up another bottle or taking another shot. Alcohol isn’t inherently bad but in excess, like many things, can lead to terrible consequences. Alcohol has a long history with mankind, is part of many facets of our lives and can be enjoyed and appreciated with moderation but it can tear apart lives and is responsible for many tragedies.
Alcoholism is one of the biggest medical problems in the Western world. Alcohol has been around since the time Jesus walked the Earth as some say. The problem continues to increase every year and has a negative impact on society. There are no upsides to alcohol. Nearly every town and city has restaurants that serve alcohol, and has stores where it can be purchased. Recently I saw a news article that said they are trying to get local stores to sell the hard liquor. For these reasons, the nature of alcoholism needs to be exposed. The problems that arise from this disease need to be shown. The purpose of this paper is to talk about the problem, the cause and effects, and the treatment process.
“According to, The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Home Medical Guide, alcohol use is involved in half of all murders, accidental deaths, and suicides; half of all crimes; and almost half of all fatal automobile accidents” (Torr 2000). Alcoholics have some to no control of how much they drink. They tend to ignore that they are abusing alcohol and continue to drink regardless of the consequences, such as losing a job, harming friends or family, or getting into trouble with the law. Which is why alcohol abuse can be caused of serious and possibly life threatening problems in the society. “Young people who began drinking before age 15 were four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who began drinking at age 21, researchers found” (Balkin 2004). Educating people about responsible drinking, parents, teachers, and law makers should portray positive and negative aspects of alcohol use. I will be defining what is alcohol abuse then explain who it effects, apply all four social perspectives, list the positive and negative effects, and state the treatments or organizations to help stop alcohol
