The Rate of Osmosis Decreases as The Internal and External Sodium Concentrations Approach Equilibrium
Introduction
Osmosis is a special case of diffusion, involving the movement of water into and out of cells (LeCornu, 2014). The water moves from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration across a semipermeable membrane. The membrane allows smaller molecules like water to pass through but prevents larger organic or charged molecules from leaving the cell. The solution with a low concentration is referred to as a “hypotonic” solution, and the one with a higher concentration is called “hypertonic” (Khan, 2015). Osmosis maintains an ideal concentration of solute within the cell. The process of osmosis ensures that nutrients are

Table B displays the average mass of the eggs by all 10 groups at each NaCl concentration.
Figure 1
Figure 1 represents the average mass of the egg for all 10 groups at each NaCl concentration. The graph demonstrates that the egg gains mass when the sodium concentration is increased up to 2%. The egg then loses mass at sodium concentrations 5% and 10%. The largest mass of the egg is at 2% NaCl.

On the fourth day, we put the egg into tap water with one drop of food coloring. The egg weighed 41 grams. It stayed in the water until the following morning. On the last day, we cleaned the egg as we did previously and weighed it. The weight was 80.33 grams.
In the beginning of the experiment, the untouched egg weighed 56.7 grams, but after being submerged into vinegar, the egg weighed 65.6 grams. The egg had a 15.7% increase in mass from the original, untouched egg to vinegar. Water went into the egg making it a hypotonic solution. The egg was more concentrated than the solute, so the water moved into the egg until it reached osmotic balance. We observed that the egg, that used to have a hard, white shell

We will be testing how the size and shape of a potato changed based on what water solution it is placed in. There will be 5 different solutions. 1. Pure water (No Sugar added) 2. 10% sugar 3. 20% sugar 4. 30% sugar 5. 40% sugar.
To properly complete this lab, a basic understanding of mass, moles, and empirical formula is required. Mass is a unit of measurement that is used to determine the number of grams in a certain object. A mole is a measurement in which the amount of substance that is present can be determined. To convert between from mass to moles the amount of grams present is divided by the atomic mass to find moles. To get back to mass from mols the amount of mols is multiplied by the atomic mass. An empirical formula is a chemical equation with the simpliest positive ratio possible. To find an empirical formula the elements in the formula must be in moles. Then the smallest amount of moles is used to divide all the other mole numbers. These numbers
To begin the experiment, we measured 5cc of water and 5g of NaCl and added them to a test tube. Next, we stoppered the test tube and shook vigorously for two or three minutes. After we observed that the solution was saturated and massed an evaporating dish (18.89g) and poured most of the solution into it, while being careful not to pour any undissolved solid into the dish. Next, we massed the evaporating dish with the solution and found it to be 23.32g. The next step was to slowly evaporate the solution in the evaporating dish using a hot plate. Once the liquid was evaporated from the solution, to the best of our ability, we massed the remaining solid in the dish, which we found to be 20.32g. This was the last step of the physical portion of the experiment, and we proceeded to the calculations. First, we found the mass of the remaining solid by subtracting the mass of the evaporating dish from the mass of the solid and evaporating dish, which we found to be 1.43g. To find the mass of the evaporated water we subtracted the mass of the solid and evaporating dish from the mass of the solution and evaporating dish, which we found to be 3g. Because the density of water is 1g/1cc, the mass is the ...
In most case osmosis is the diffusion of water. Osmosis is a physical process in which a solvent moves, without input of energy, across a semi permeable membrane separating two solution of different concentrations. The osmotic pressure is defined to be the pressure required to maintain equilibrium, with no net movement of solvent. Osmotic pressure depends on the molar concentration of the solute and not on it identity. It is the exact amount of pressure required to stop osmosis. The tonicity of a solution refers to the effect on cell volume of the concentration of non-penetrating solutes in the solution surrounding the cell

... of films on liquids” (12). What things are larger than 1 Angstrom? A few are bacteria, viruses, organic matters and small planktonic organisms but we will get into this later (1). When the membranes separate two water types, water molecules pass from the less concentrated zone into the more concentrated zone in order to balance ionic forces. To reverse the natural flow of water through the membrane, pressure greater than osmotic pressure has to be applied on the concentrated solution. Providing pressures from 70 to 84 bars, 40 to 60% of seawater or brackish water is converted into fresh water by reverse osmosis. The influent saline solution is divided into two phases. Permeate is the first which is the fresh water free of particulates and dissolved impurities and the second is the concentrate stream which is brine enriched with suspended and dissolved solids (1).

Before the egg was submerged, it appeared as a typical egg with an average weight and size. When placed into the vinegar, no immediate changes or effects were noticeable. Later, after 24 hours the egg had changed significantly. The colour of the egg was much more yellow, and had noticeably increased in size. Almost the entire shell dissolved into the vinegar. One part of the egg, which had not been sunken into the vinegar, still had an area of shell still attached. The texture of the egg was very rubbery.
The first part of the procedure in this project was to boil nine eggs. After that I place three eggs each in three separate containers with one cup each of tea, coffee, or Coca-Cola. The egg was monitored for three days while
The rate of osmosis decreased as the concentration increased. This is because the egg began with a certain solute concentration and was placed in the distilled water with zero salt concentration, the rate of osmosis into the egg was highest here as it was the largest concentration gradient from the egg to the solution. Therefore the water molecules diffused into the egg through the membrane as moving against the concentration gradient from low to high concentration. As the egg moved into the next solution of higher concentration there was a slower rate of osmosis due to the increase in solute concentration and therefore a lower concentration gradient however there is still an overall net movement of water into the egg. The rate
If there is a higher concentration of NaCl in the solution, then the hatching viability of the brine shrimp will increase.
= == In my investigation to find out how salt solution concentration affect the mass of potatoes, I will investigate how much the mass of a potato changes if I leave it in a beaker of water with a specified salt concentration for half an hour. I will change the salt concentration after each experiment. Background Knowledge --------------------
