The influences of any era is evident through artwork and architecture. During the Middle Ages the main influence was the church, this is evident through the focus on biblical and religious symbols. During the Renaissance the main focus was the study of people. This is shown through the increase in self portraits and classical antiquity-inspired buildings. The change between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is best shown through the art and architecture, demonstrated specifically through an emphasis on religion and classical antiquity, both suggesting a clear cultural change.
These works were reused so that the individuals are willing to be more liberal of what is around them as opposed to the spiritual or divine and this is how humanism began to rise. The humanists who studied the humanity such as grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy or ethics, and history are all based on ancient Greek and Roman authors. Humanism would not deny the existence of God because they also were close to the Catholic Church. There are two major factors for the rise of humanism. First, after the decline of Rome the Italian scholars were fascinated by the sources found in Rome that this led them to find more Roman writings.

The Renaissance was a time characterized by a curiosity about human experience and the world around Renaissance thinkers. A main focus of the Renaissance was ancient Rome and Greece, which people studied in order to get a better understanding of their world. Artists and writers were able to express the ideals of the Renaissance by using an element of realism in their work that people of the time could easily relate to and understand. The Renaissance can be identified as a creative time, marking a transition from an agricultural to urban society, in which trade carried a greater importance. New technology and ways of thinking allowed people to better understand their past, and the world they lived in today.
This new rise of educational facilities gave people the opportunity to become more educated, which opened new concepts of science, mathematics and other subjects. This could in turn create adverse thinking—those to which the church would be opposed to. In addition, Christians throughout the Middle Ages were very constant with their religion, especially by their constant attempt to win over Jerusalem with the Crusades and most likely convert those who they conquer. According to the textbook, “in the fourteenth century, medieval music underwent significant changes, including the rise of secular music along the church music” (411). This is perhaps pertaining to the start of the Renaissance, but it highlights that not only education was responsible for the new intellectual thinking, but music was becoming more common throughout the Middle Ages.
