Quite a bit of time has passed since I have last had any communication with you, so I am pleased to be writing this letter. It is exciting to think about what it will be like at the reunion of our class; what everyone will look like, and what they have done with their lives. Living out here in Antarctica, I tend to feel fairly isolated. On the cruise, I plan to first visit Casablanca, then ride the ship to Rome, where I will visit both modern and ancient Roman sites. Following this, I will take a visit to Athens, and top it off with a serene experience in the Austrian Alps. You are likely wondering what I have been doing in Antarctica. For the past 14 months, I have been working at a research station on medical science (my team is doing it on this continent to take advantage of the additional freedom of not being on a sovereign territory). Antarctica is under an international agreement called the Antarctic Treaty, allowing freedom for scientific work, while also allowing our discoveries to be shared around the world (The Antarctic Treaty). After we graduated from high school, I went on to take medical classes at Boise State University. As soon as I got out of that, I was hired as a trainee on the research team that I have proceeded to obtain leadership of. The quality of life down here in the Antarctic isn’t as bad as you might think. My research on the effect of cold on diseased cells keeps me occupied most of the time, but when I get bored, I sometimes make ice sculptures. I rarely have the need to step outside into the frigid cold, and it’s nice and warm inside our facility. I get paid well enough, about $190,000 a year, though there isn’t much to use the money for here as far as recreation goes. Additionally, Hiking in the Alps will certainly help to relieve my stress from working in a bunker in Antarctica, and I hope that your experiences on your trip will have a similar effect.
