Being a first generation American is a wonderful blessing in many ways, you can strive for opportunities that were probably not available to your parents and you have a lot of control in the way you wish to lead your life. It can also be a great burden however; a lot can be expected of you. My parents immigrated to the United States after living seven difficult years in Jordan as refugees. They fled their home country of Iraq to Jordan with nothing but the clothes on their backs and me as a 6-month old child to escape imminent war. I witnessed my parents make great sacrifices during our time in Jordan, sacrifices they made just for the greater good of their children. So when the United Nations finally granted my family refuge into the United States my parents understood the magnitude of this great blessing. My parents always encouraged me to strive for the best, so when they noticed my mediocre grades and lack of motivation in high school they were not happy with me and always reminded me to be grateful for the opportunities in front of me. Throughout my experiences in the academic and professional spheres I have become well versed in what being a Physician Assistant entails and it is a challenge that I am eager to embrace whole-heartedly. I have greatly matured since my days in college and I am ready to serve an important role in my community. I learned that in medicine building strong relationships with your patients is just as important as any form of treatment that you will ever provide and it is through my clinical experiences that I was able to reach this very important epiphany. In the beginning of fall of 2016, I got a job as a medical assistant. It’s long process to get this sort of job, at least with the University of Utah so when I finally went through the orientation, lab training, computer training, and community clinics I got to work and realized there was, even more, training. Every clinic has its personal preferences and rules, so I had to start from scratch with the training I already had. As soon as I got therenoticeI was a given a quick tour of the clinic and given all the rules, passwords and regulations. It was already too much to handle, but I was memorizing as much as I could. I can’t always function under pressure, but I tried not to let my nerves get to me.

The medical field is among the largest and ever growing career fields, especially when dealing with Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs). In the 1960’s when the physician shortage began, the medical field created the PA and NP positions to fill in the gaps (Curren, 2007, p. 404). This matter has opened up numerous questions as more and more PAs and NPs begin practicing, especially concerning their education level. Many patients are concerned that they will not get the proper care. PAs/NPs are beneficial to everyday life by providing patients with the necessary skills needed to successfully treat them.
Affected by my family, my background, and everything around me, I was born in a family who is the first generation to get here. My grandmother, and my parents, along with some other relatives, moved here in search of better opportunities, like those from other countries for the same idea. They started out fresh but had a hard time to get started, when I was little, I assumed it had to be somewhat easy, but for people who do not know English it is like starting from scratch, but they did well, they’ve made it.
Is Medical Assisting a great job for me in the future world? Medical assisting is a job that you help people with. This job includes things like taking blood samples, giving shots, check-ups, etc. Any interests I have had within this career is that you help others, prescribe medicine if they are in need, being prompt and taking care of others. Related talents to this career that I have is enjoying helping people, experiencing blood, doing regular check-ups etc. I have selected medical assisting as a career because its easy/ great training in under a year, employment growth, and flexible schedule. I believe that being a medical assisting is the best career for me.
After review of my skills, interests, and experiences, I decided to pursue the medical career field as my first career choice, more specifically as a physician assistant. I will exceed in this position in the interest of that I like to help people and I solve problems well. Also, I communicate well with others and I have a great amount of patience. There are various careers that fit my skills and interests, but this one grabs my attention. My dream job is to be a doctor, but this occupation allows one to save money by lessening the years of school required. Also, the pay isn’t too shabby either. I will be successful in this position due to my skills, characteristics, and values, like honesty and helping others. Up to this point, I have job shadowed at a medical billing company and I like the idea of diagnosing and helping people, but a desk job is not ideal. Also, I took a medical terminology as a class and I discovered that I like how the body works and what it does. These factors have all influenced my career goal.
Any job in the medical field is great, because it will always be needed no matter what. Doctors, nurses, techs, etc. are all very important and necessary people, but the people behind the scenes are just as important, medical administrative assistants. As a second year Pathologists’ Assistant student at Indiana University School of Medicine, I am writing to express my interest in the Pathologists’ Assistant position. I believe that this position is ideal for me because my internship at Montefiore was the first step in me become a Pathologists’ Assistant. Many people rush through their daily life without contemplating their actions, thereby missing vast opportunities for achievement. They waste valuable time engaging in frivolous matters instead of putting their energies towards more productive and meaningful purposes. In the words of the Dalai Lama: “Life is not about acquiring money and other facilities; it is about dedicating your life to helping others as much as you can.” The immeasurable value of helping others has been engrained in me since childhood. At the end of volunteer services I have decided on a major, I am now striving to become a physician’s assistant. When I was a boy, I was always happy and was a bright student. I was always eager to learn something new and I always gave my best effort at whatever I did, all the while helping my peers to learn in a fun and creative way. One summer during elementary school, my parents sat me down on my living room couch and delivered the worst news a little boy could hear: my best friend had drowned at a birthday party that I was getting ready to go to. I was different from that point on, seemingly forever. I became unhappy, yet I was still a bright kid, but I lost my ability to self-motivate. My parents tried to help me as best they could, which led to them sheltering me throughout high school. I felt suffocated by their actions, even though they had my best interests in mind.
