Armenian Americans
Introduction
The United States is made up of a multitude of different ethnic backgrounds and cultures. We have always been called “the Land of the Free”, which has aided in making the United States more appealing to those who have had to seek refuge from their homelands during war and other hostile situations. Unfortunately, those who have had to seek refuge here have not always been welcome with open arms. We as a nation and I hate to admit it, are just racist.
In the 1600’s, we used African Americans as slaves to basically do our dirty work. We did not allow them to own anything or even to learn how to read or write. They did not have any rights as human beings. We degraded them and made them out to be nothing. Obviously, now that has changed. Native Americans were torn away from their land and murdered for absolutely no reason. During World War II when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, we were angry at Japanese Americans and if they were caught in the United States, they would be kept as prisoners. Just because they were Japanese, they held accountable for the actions of the people from their homeland.
Currently, the war on terror has caused an outrage for Americans who are from or descendents of those from the Middle East, such as, Pakistanis, Iraqis, etc. How is it fair for us to claim that we are the “Land of the Free” when we hold so much anger towards those who have a different color of skin or who come from a different ethnic background? Conclusion
In conclusion, it is always a good idea to be knowledgeable of different cultures to avoid being disrespectful to others. We are known as a diverse country and we honestly need to start acting like we are. It is no longer a black or white country. We are made up of all different races, genders, ages, sexes, religious preferences, etc. We are diverse.

African American history plays a huge role in history today. From decades of research we can see the process that this culture went through and how they were depressed and deculturalized. In school, we take the time to learn about African American History but, we fail to see the aspects that African Americans had to overcome to be where they are today. We also fail to view life in their shoes and fundamentally understand the hardships and processes that they went through. African Americans were treated so terribly and poor in the last century and, they still are today. As a subordinate race to the American White race, African Americans were not treated equal, fair, human, or right under any circumstances. Being in the subordinate position African Americans are controlled by the higher white group in everything that they do.
We talked a lot about dehumanization and oppression. This has been going on for many years in the United States. It started when America was colonized. The first people that were dehumanized here in the United States, were the Native Americans. “..described the “savages” as “cruel beasts,” who possessed “a more unnatural brutishness” than wild animals.” (Takaki, 2008, p. 36). The Native Americans were considered to be animals and because of that were treated as animals. This type of dehumanization and oppression continued. In the 1960’s there were over 18 million African Americans that resided in the south (African Americans), 90 percent of them were victims of slavery or segregation. Ever since coming to America, African Americans have been victims of hate from the white Americans. The blacks were enslaved soon after coming to America, and once slavery ended the harsh treatment continued. All throughout the 1800’s and 1900’s blacks were segregated and treated like diseased animals. In the 1960’s the Civil Rights Movement came into full swing and they started the beginning of the end of all Jim Crow laws and segregation. The treatment of African Americans in the south has changed over the years. They went from slaves, to separate but equal, to segregated, to free.
Some Americans still believe that they are the “real” Americans. After the settlers completely conquered the America, they enslaved Native Americans, blacks, and Asians: Blacks were the biggest victims of American slavery. According to the textbook, “Created Equal,” the settlers, white people, started to “trade slaves” in 1680’s. This event illustrates that whites ruined blacks’ human rights and treated them as their properties. Black men “did not have the right to vote, and their children could not go to public schools” (Jacqueline el at. 2013, p. 228). Most black men “worked as farm hands or manual laborers” and most black women “worked as domestic servants or laundresses”. Because of this historical background, blacks are recognized as workers: whites are recognized as owners. Of course, these days, there are many black people whose work positions are higher than whites. However, in America, there is still a prejudice or stereotype of the people who have different skin tones since this historical event affect their beliefs. Also, whites were “seeing blacks as separate” because of their skin tones. This is paradoxical since white people do not think they are actually foreigners: they are not the indigenous people in America. Since black people were
African- Americans have a long and strenuous history in the United States. Even though today, our country seems for the most part, free of racial bias, this was not always the case. African- Americans were brought to this country to be sold and used as slaves. They endured horrible working conditions, and an even harder lifestyle that consisted of being treated like property instead of actual human beings. It was not until after the Civil War; the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1865, that African- Americans were legally freed of their duty to slavery. However, even after they were freed, life was not easy and they did not possess all the same freedoms as white Americans. This period from 1865 to 1903 was the objective for W.E.B' Du Bois to write his book, The Souls of Black Folk, which focuses on the experiences of African- Americans after they were granted freedom.
Though we are to listen to the dis-empowered, it is also pivotal for us to be aware of our own biases. This is because we are in place to address prejudice such as sexism and racism. The goal at the end of everything is to be culturally competent. This will come when we continue to address prejudice and become genuine as we gain more insight of different culture as well as our thoughts. Ultimately we need to show respect to any and every one we come in contact
Slavery has been a problem in many societies throughout all of history. It is not always out of prejudice or racism, often times people of the same ethnicity and nationality enslaved each other because of debt or some other reason. However in the instance of the African slave trade, it was without just cause and an extreme display of racism. Slavery in America was a horrible thing. Blacks were subject to overworking and humiliation by white men. Although this was not the case in every slave to master relationship, owning another person as property when they owe you no debt is still degrading, no matter how you treat the person. African Americans have suffered many hardships through slavery, were set free as a result of the Civil War, fought for their rights in the civil rights movement, and are on both sides of the coin when it comes to racism in America.
The beginning of African American slavery in America in 1619 deeply impacted the culture of African Americans. The overall experience that African American slaves encountered throughout their journey to freedom is a tragedy. As a whole, they were continuously disrespected and treated poorly by nearly all white people. Regardless of what type of slave or which geographical area the slave resided in, they were considered property and were never capable of being equal to whites. Nearly two and a half centuries later in 1865, slavery was abolished with passing of the 13th amendment. African American slaves may have been severely mistreated on a daily basis, but they were able to deal with the circumstances that were laid out in front of them by turning to religion and coming together as a family (House).
History shows that slavery consisted of African Americans being treated inferior to whites. Slaves were mostly African Americans and even though today slavery is over people still look at blacks as less important than whites. Slavery has impacted our society today because people are still prejudice and discriminatory towards African Americans, they are still living in poverty and don’t have proper education and they don’t have an equal opportunity for jobs. Still today African Americans continue to lag behind whites.
Today, the United States is considered to be one of the most diverse countries in the world with regards to its citizens being of a different race and ethnic background other than white, but sadly this was not always the case. During the post-emancipation era, also known as the period of “redemption” for southern whites, was a time of great racial violence and hate from most white individuals, typically farm and plantation owners, towards the newly freed slaves emancipated after the civil war, which of whom were predominantly black. Right before the civil war, society was separated into two racial hierarchies: white, and black. If an individual was of any color other than white they were labeled as a slave and considered someone’s, referring to white slave owners, property. After the civil war America’s social lifestyle and overall government changed dramatically due to the emancipation of slaves in the south. When African Americans were emancipated the idea and concept that was once accepted, any individual other than white is considered to be insubordinate and a slave, was now abolished and considered inhumane. This caused a major disruption within society because former slave owners lost huge amounts of manpower that use to work and generate profit by making enslaved individuals farm their land. As a result, once wealthy farmers and plantation owners became the poorest of poor with no one to work their fields and no money to even hire anyone because of post-war fees that needed to be paid. For decades, African Americans have been on a racial discrimination and extremely deadly roller coaster ride for justice and equality. In this new day and age, racial tendencies and prejudice has improved since the 1700-1800s,however, they are slowly going back to certain old ways with voting laws and restaurants having the option to serve blacks or not. It all began with the start of slavery around 1619. The start of the New World, the settlers needed resources England and other countries had, which started the Triangle Trade. The New England settlers manufactured and shipped rum to West Africa; West Africa traded slaves to the West Indies for molasses and money . From the very beginning, they treated African Americans like an object or animals instead of another human being with feelings and emotions. Women that were pregnant gave birth to children already classified as slaves. After the American Revolution, people in the north started to realize the oppression and treatment of blacks to how the British was treating them. In 1787, the Northwest Territory made slavery illegal and the US Constitution states that congress could no longer ban the trade of slaves until 1808 (Brunner). However, since the invention of the cotton gin, the increase for labor on the field increased the demand for slave workers. Soon the South went thru an economic crisis with the soil, tobacco, and cash crops with dropped the prices of slaves and increased slave labor even more. Respecting one another is important, even though a lot of people still disregard that, which should discontinue. We should all start to learn how to make this world a better place,
