Gun control has been a major debate in United States for many years now. Some people are for gun control, and some people are against it. What are the reasons that people are so for gun control? Unlike other countries, the United States has strict laws against who can and can’t own firearms. In today’s world this brings many controversial issues. One of the arguments is that it is a person’s right to bear arms which is stated in the second amendment. Self-defense, recreational hunting, and shooting sports are three of the major reasons why people want to be able to have the right to own guns. People in favor of gun control believe that fewer guns would equal less violence and lower the death rate. More than thirty-thousand Americans …show more content…
The debate over gun control has always been around but on April 20th, 1999 at Columbine High School, two high school students went on a shooting spree killing 13 students and injuring more than two dozen, in 1999 in Littleton, Colorado. This incident was the worst school shooting in United States History. This incident also brought about the beginning of many school shootings to follow. Many people blame violence on television and others blamed guns. Many wonder without the right to own guns, would these types of happenings be possible. This shooting opened many eyes on gun violence and promoted the debate we are still talking about today. Citizens believe that there should be only certain people who can purchase firearms such as people with clean background checks and those who have no metal illness. These laws can only go so far though, like in the Columbine shooting, the two teenage boys had stolen the guns off their parents who had no idea they were missing. This was also the case in many other school shooting that were to follow what happened on April 20th …show more content…
Should the citizens of the United States be able to keep and have any type of firearms they want? Or should America put a restriction on guns to see if it will lower the death rate and crime rate of America? All these questions people debate about every day. When the debate is over and the United States decides what is best for the country to keep the laws the same or to change them, the citizens will see if the death rates will keep rising if they have for many years or if they will fall due to new laws that were
In The United States of America there are lots of problems that are plaguing our nation. Gun Control is a problem that there is lots of controversy over. This is a problem that had a fire reignited under it when on December 14, 2012 a school in Connecticut was attacked. Many legislative bills have been introduced since then. (Focus of U.S Gun Control Shifts to States Year after Newtown Shooting) There are lots of issues that we have in our community with Gun Control that we have controversy over: background checks, age, classes, military guns, pistols, shotguns, and rifles. All of these things are apart of the plague in our Nation.
America is the most well armed nation in the world, with American citizens owning about 270 million of the world’s 875 million firearms (Marshall). Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. Hence, gun control is a frequently discussed controversial topic in American politics.
Gun control is a topic that stirs a strong opinion from the general public. Gun control is the effort to regulate or control usage and sales of guns. The right to bear arms is granted to all Americans by the Second Amendment and many consider it essential to maintain order in the United States of America. Even though this was the Second Amendment right granted to citizens in the Bill of Rights, many Americans opt not to own a gun, and others would like for this right to be abolished altogether. Both sides of this issue have a good argument, but when further researched, there are many more details that come up explain why siding against gun control is a better conclusion for the United States and its people. Some may say gun control should be enforced because it will make the pubic a safer place to be and decrease gun violence. “An average of eight children and teens under the age of twenty are killed by guns every day" ("Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence", 2012). The United States' current president, Barack Obama, is currently working on enforcing and passing more laws and legislation to protect the families and the citizens of the United States. The successful enforcement of our current laws would be a major stride toward decreasing the amount of crimes committed with guns and the amount of criminals with gun possession. The most challenging element of the gun control debate is whether existing gun laws are adequate or whether more gun laws need to be created and enforced.
People against gun control feel that it is a violation of the Constitution to control the sale and distribution and the registration of guns and gun owners (Band, The Editorial 2) . But it is necessary for there to be certain limits on the way that firearms are handled in this country because of the homicide rate involving guns, and because of the violence created by criminals using guns. If gun control legislation were to go through; there would be a significant decline in gun related crimes and fatalities (Sowell 2). Gun control should be control in this society, and laws should be enforced. Gun violence, protection, and safety and fall into this category. The laws should protect people’s safety and also people’s self-defense. I do believe that gun control has a big impact on society because of: gun violence, gun laws, and people’s protection (Sowell
Just in the US there are over 100,000 people shot each year. 72 perecent of all violent killings use guns as the weapon. 40 percent of US homes have guns, 57 percent of people in which do have guns believe there should be major restrictions or a ban on guns. In January 2016, Obama announced new actions on gun control, these actions include an update and expansion on background checks. The Supreme Court held a collective right that to own guns is a purpose for maintaining a militia. There should be more gun control laws because it would help reduce the high rate of violent crimes. More laws need to be made to protect oneself from harm of others.
Is scary to think about family members or close friends dying innocently because they were victims of a gun shooting. The recent shooting at a 7-Eleven store, across from Cerritos College, has many people talking about gun violence. In America, on of the biggest issue is gun violence. Throughout the years, the gun violence in America has been increasing. Most of the time, the shootings occur at schools, stores and at public places where lots of innocent people get injured or dies. When a shooting happens, the news reporter, social media or at the front page of a newspaper talks about the problems with guns. There are two sides in this gun debate, one is making more laws and the other is more guns. Individuals must consider which side of the debate offers the greatest gain for the least cost. Looking back to laws, making more laws will not work because individuals will break the rules. Many will not stop until they own a gun, legally or illegally. Even though, some individuals do not favor the right to own a gun, owning a gun will determine the live or death of an individual by making sure the individual is safe. Having the right to own guns might help save more people’s lives because a gun will be a really good source of protection. In terms of the gun debate in America, individuals should prioritize personal liberty because having more guns people might feel more safe and protected.
There is an American consensus for some form of gun control. “…[F]irearms were involved in two-thirds of all murders in the United States and [t]he United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths…murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology” (Lepore). There might be some far extreme people who think that all guns should be banned but most sane Americans do not think that gun rights should be abolished. Americans regard self-defense as the most compelling reason to have a gun and twenty-two percent of households have handguns in the United States. However many people do think that gun control laws must be enacted and enforced. Pro-gun extremists and the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) must understand that there is a real for many people at the uncontrolled s...
However, the opponents do agree that a death rate of 30 million a year due to the powerful and deadly weapon is too high; only they have different views on how to lower this rate. These arms, proven by statistics, provide the result of 30 million murders, suicides, and accidental deaths each year (Dolan 1). The number of firearms is estimated to be over 150 million and outnumber all of our cars, trucks, and busses by more than 25 million (Dolan 7). A large percentage of these firearms are held by half of the nation’s families that for the most part use them for the lawful protection of their homes and will most likely never be used (Dolan 7). “And the millions more are kept by responsible sportsmen for hunting, trapshooting, and target shooting,” this was a reply from Dolan to an English visitor to America, who was astonished by the figures of firearms (7). “I’d say that the United States is an armed camp,” said the English visitor (Dolan 7). In despondence to Dolan’s defending the millions of guns owned by citizens for protection or sport, the Englishman said, “One hundred and fifty million guns. It doesn’t matter what they’re used for. If they’re loaded someone’s bound to get hurt.”(Dolan 7-8). America has one of the highest death rates due to guns, however, gun deaths are on the rise in other countries, such as, Great Britain, France, Germany, and Australia (Hawkes 4). In the United States handguns are used in more than 184,000 armed robberies every year and more than 11,000 murders and manslaughter’s (Hawkes 6). Every 20 minutes someone in the United States dies by a gun as a result of murders, accidents, or suicides (Hawkes 5). Although, all guns are deadly, the most dangerous is the handgun (Dolan 9). The handgun is responsible for 50 percent of the United States murders, leading to a figure of 30 murders a day and when you add suicides and fatal accidents the daily death-rate rises to over sixty (Dolan 9). All of this lea...
The following 6 arguments are in favor for gun control. They are in ranked from the strongest to the weakest arguments. Having more gun laws on the books would decrease deaths. Between 1999 and 2013 the total gun related deaths were 464,033. (ProCon.org 2016) Cause of all deaths being killed by a firearm is ranked 12th. It is alarming that 200 people go to the emergency every day because of a gunshot wound. Furthermore, having federal universal background checks could reduce death by 56.9 percent. (ProCon.org 2016) Along with background checks for ammunition would further reduce the death toll by 80.7 percent and having a gun identification requirement could reduce the death rate by 82.5 percent. (ProCon.org 2016)
According to the Second Amendment in the Constitution, the citizens have the right to possess and bear arms. This is still a big issue in today 's society as we are in the 21st century the use of guns has changed significantly. The fact that crime has increased and that the right to own a handgun has been a hot issue have made many Americans question whether gun and crime are directly related. The issue of gun control, in an attempt to reduce crime rates in The United States has also been a topic of discussion that seems to have many people divided on the issue. Even though many people believe gun control violates the right to bear arms which is in the constitution, Americans know that more strict rules need to be put in place to because of
“A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” wrote James Madison into the constitution of the United States. However, compared to that of Japan, whom allow no guns to be held by citizens, the United States allowed and perceived constitution in such a way that allows thousands of people to die yearly. Some argue that gun control is against the constitution in their perception, yet it clearly states that guns should be “well-regulated,” firstly. Even though guns may prevent assaults and robberies, it is imperative that the conditions of firearm possession be impeded beyond current means because the availability of guns correlates with an increase of homicide, yet the United States currently has the highest rate of gun violence, and over 50% of the world’s guns.
A dark shadow crept through the dark house, drawers slid open, valuables were softly removed. Suddenly the lights switched on, the mechanical noise of a 12 gauge cocking splits the silence. This is a criminal’s worst nightmare, not the police, but an angry victim armed with a gun. Our country should avoid gun control for many reasons including; the constitution states in several places that honest citizens should have ready access to firearms, disarming citizens leaves them defenseless, criminals will still get guns illegally, and finally that people, not guns, kill people.
“It's not a gun control problem; it's a cultural control problem.” (Barr). This quote is saying how if the government takes away the weapons, the problems with the weapons will still be there with the people. The current situation surrounding gun control is that the government is trying to pass a bill to limit or completely take away guns from the people of the United States. Gun control should not be allowed and everyone should be allowed to own weapons. The government should not mandate gun control because of the selling of guns and extra things that go with guns help the economy, how guns affect crime rates and how gun control laws really don’t help with violent gun crimes.
How would you feel if your best friend shot you? BANG! It may sound like a cliche but it is a reality. In a single year there have been over 350 mass shootings . According to a BBC article 60% of the US’s murders are a result of firearms (Guns in the US). Most states’ laws state that handguns can be bought by anyone over the age of 21, but long guns, including assault rifles, the legal age to buy is 18. Thomas Jefferson was quoted saying,“For an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” To almost everyone that makes gun laws seem somewhat reasonable, but do you think we need high magazine assault rifles to protect our homes our ourselves?
In America, the gun debate has been in the media numerous times. According to The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun violence, in the past two years two cases involving gun violence have reached the nation’s highest court. While most people argue that guns should not be allowed to the public because gun violence has gone up in the past years others believe that banning guns completely would be a violation of the second amendment and their rights to protect themselves.
