What are the arguments for and against the use of autonomous robots by the military? Reference both existing and potential future uses.

Autonomous robots are machines that can perform certain tasks at a high level of automation and therefore do not need a lot of human intervention. The robots can gather information about the environment they’re in and avoid situations that are harmful to people. In certain cases, this means that the robots can actually find more suitable and safe methods of reaching their final goal as they get used to their surroundings. This makes them useful in fields such as space exploration, cleaning and the delivery of goods and services. It’s predicted to stand at 6’2 which would be terrifying if someone were to replace the arms meant to lift rubble out of the way with guns. Many people think that if one country fully automates their military it will put more pressure on other countries to do the same. Consequently, countries that cannot afford to do so may be more at risk of being taken over. In addition, if a countries military consists of robots only, governments may have an easier decision to make if they want to go into war. This puts more pressure on civilians as they will have no say in the consequences that come with war.
All across the border of North and South Korea are robot sentries that work 24 hours a day. They can detect intruders and attack them from 3 miles away. As they require no human presence they won’t think about whether they’re actually an intruder or not before they fire. This could lead to an unfortunate shooting of an innocent person.
Various human rights organisations have been urging the UN to ban the automation of the military such as Campaign to Stop Killer Robots and Human Rights Watch. They have been set up after questions were asked about the ethical issues behind the rumours of the drones and what they would be used for.
