Animal Testing
“The question is not, can they reason, nor, can they talk. But, can they suffer” ( “Harm and Suffering”). Testing on animals has been around since about 1831. It was a thing of the past, researchers and scientists were not sure if there was another way to test new medicines and cosmetics. But now scientists have found an alternative. Animals are usually tested for new vaccines, medicine, cosmetics and more. Animals feel both physical and mental pain, they are also harmed and often killed after the experiment or due to the experiment. They often suffer from food and water deprivation, and forced chemical exposure. Most of which are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Therefore, animal testing is wrong and inhumane, and should be banned from further experiments. There are many different types of animals that are usually tested. Most include rabbits, rats, mice, cats, fish, and many more. Many of these animals are used for different experiments and suffer in different ways. “Over 115 million animals are used in research” (“About Animal Testing ”) each year. The researchers will take the animal of chosen then restrain them with hands, legs, and neck restraints. The scientists then proceeds to repeatedly inject that animal until an irritation or reaction occurs. “Many animal experiments utilize restraining devices, designed to prevent an animal from moving. Some research projects call for immobilization of specific parts of an animal’s body—head and neck, legs and pelvis—while other protocols involve immobilization of an animal’s entire body” (“Harm and Suffering”).
