“Eighty percent of the American people want Bible readings and Prayer in the schools... Why should the majority be so severely penalized by the protests of a handful.” (Graham). In the present time there are still negative lingering effects of Prayer being taken out of school. Prayer should be reinstated back into all public school systems because it promotes positive self-esteem, self-morals and values, and it reduces crime among young people. Reinstating prayer in other words means putting prayer back into the public school system. Prayer refers to a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God. “Prayer is, at root, simply paying attention to God.”(Martin). Since then sexually transmitted disease has doubled, pregnancies to unwed girls have doubled, birth rates for unwed girls have doubled, pre-marital sex has doubled, single parent households have doubled, unmarried couple living together has doubled, divorce rates has doubled, alcohol consumption has doubled and SAT scores have decreased by 100 points. Ninety percent of kids in America today attend public school. Since 1963, violent crimes in the U.S. has increased by 544%. Also, illegal drugs in the streets have almost become uncontrollable. An estimated 30 million lives have been lost through abortion. Prayer back in schools can promote a number of things including higher self-esteem, higher self-morals and values, and it reduces violent crimes among young people. Prayer being taken out of school is the direct reason our country has been in a downward spiral for 45 years. No prayer in schools has resulted in higher rates of STD’s, births of unwed girls and divorce rates. Also, it has caused lower SAT
