In an American society where more than two thirds of the human population is considered to be obese or overweight, modern food diets have either succeeded or utterly failed. Proper dieting can allow for improved longevity, combating severe diseases, and enhancing psychological moods. Over the evolution of human nature, the human body has became sophisticated and well adaptive to a wide span of diets in correlation with the food on earth. Yet, one particular diet that I have become fascinated with is veganism. According to Winston Craig, “Compared with other vegetarian diets, vegan diets tend to contain less saturated fat and cholesterol and more dietary fiber. Vegans tend to be thinner, have lower serum cholesterol, and lower blood pressure, reducing their risk of heart disease” (Craig, 2009). Yet, I have always had this notion that eating vegan-style diet would just only allow me to be skinny. Through my investigation, I discovered that vegans consume greater quantities of fruit and vegetables than omnivores. In fact the fruit and vegetables that vegans consume regularly, like tomatoes or allium vegetables, has been associated with lower incidences of stroke (Craig, 2009). A allium vegetable is genus of monocotyledonous flowering plants just like onions and garlics (Craig, 2009). My biology courses through ball state have emphasized how devastating high blood pressure coming from saturated fats can be on a cardiovascular system of a human. These saturated fats are found in meat bacon, chicken, sausage, and hamburgers. Food that I typically enjoy like fast food and pizza can put me at a significant risk to develop a cardiovascular disease. Vegans implement walnuts, which are fantastic sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. I admire how vegan dieters are able find ways to allow their bodies to receive the proper nutrients.
