They say that the pen is mightier than the sword, and in the case of the Truman Doctrine and NSC-68, this rings true. The world was seeing so many vast changes in power, so many revolutions, and so much blood shed due to war; it was hard to find a solid standing ground for the United States when it came to their stance on foreign policy. America has been a proud nation, and one that stood firm in its believes, but in the late 1940s and early 1950s, many people in government disagreed on just what to do when it came to the issue of Soviet Union, the rise and fall of communism, and countries such as Greece and Turkey, failing due to the revolutions they were facing because of soviet uprising. Truman expresses in his Truman Doctrine. During the early 1950s, Greece and Turkey were crumbling, and the United Nations stated that they would no longer be able to assist them. I firmly agree with Truman when he stated “Greece must have assistance if it is to become a self-supporting and self-respecting democracy. The United States must supply that assistance. We have already extended to Greece certain types of relief and economic aid but these are inadequate.” We as a nation are somewhat going through the same thing now with Syria and their refugees. Truman’s words true in some aspects, but many wanted to see a much firmer response to the Soviets invading and destroying countries, because as they took over others, it was imposing major threats threat they would soon turn up on our shores to do the …show more content…

The biggest one is the creation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Because of the NSC68, different countries banded together for the common core of stopping the Soviets and making communism a thing of the past. We still see this working every day, one specific place is the fall of the Berlin Wall. When they were able to tear down a wall literally dividing Germany in Half, and join a nation together again, containment of the Soviet powers was stronger then ever. When the US, Canada, and the United Nations banded together to form NATO, the world could almost breath a sigh of relief. “Currently, NATO is operating in Afghanistan, Kosovo, the Mediterranean and off the Horn of Africa.” And to say this is not a lasting positive effect to come from containment, is uneducated. Throughout the years we can see just how beneficial containment, the NSC68 and the Truman Doctrine were for America and the world. Were there flaws, of course, it’s a plan made by people, who themselves are nowhere near perfect, but we saw the stop of communism, the banding of nations (NATO), and the ultimate bankrupting of the USSR. It has been an astounding and monumental change to American foreign policy that has kept us one of the great power houses of the world, and that is what we call a huge and positive lasting
