Social media has become a lifeline in countless people’s lives in today’s society. One of the most popular social networking sites is Facebook. With millions of account holders, it is hard to find an individual who does not associate with Facebook. This shows that Facebook impacts a vast number of people throughout the world. For many, social media has become their source of an outlet, allowing them to forget the stress in their daily lives. This allows them to develop a strong need to keep the source of their stress reliever close by, and Facebook is a major example of these sources. With so many people relying on Facebook to alleviate them of their stress, it’s not hard to realize that addiction to Facebook is on the rise. Most of these Facebook addicts exist in our generation, mainly the high school and college age groups. There are many different factors to why Facebook is extremely popular among this age group. For example, Facebook allows its users to meet new acquaintances while staying connected with older acquaintances. It is also a convenient way of sharing experiences with others, while at the same time being able to see what journeys their friends and family have experienced. Each one of these plays a major role on why Facebook has become an addiction to many not only in our generation, but to older generations as well. Facebook is a free type of social media for its users. It includes many beneficial features; Facebook messenger, video chat, and also the opportunity to upload photographs, without the hassle of a usage fee. Lorna H. Findlay contributes a list of advantages to using Facebook, including “allowing users to search for new and old friends, accessible to chosen universities having a high level of security, makes it less awkward for strangers to communicate if they don’t know each other well, makes it easy to join groups and pages with common likes and dislikes, and allows users to see students who are taking similar classes as them and living in the same area” (Facebook Advantages and Disadvantages). Each of these advantages play an important role in explaining why Facebook has become such a popular type of social media.

In conclusion, Facebook has become a major issue in today’s society. Not only does it have an effect on the way people use their social skills, but also has become an addictive behavior for many. It also has the potential of being dangerous for the account holder. Of course, some will argue that Facebook has some extremely beneficial factors, but the negatives tend to outweigh the positive factors. Learning how to use Facebook positively can eventually lead to a healthier life
