Introductory Paragraph: School Districts throughout the United States have debated whether to keep, or let go of sports. These programs cause superfluous problems for institutions. Since many student-athletes value activities more than academics, schools should suspend these pastimes in order to cut costs, allow players to focus on their learning, and to keep later start times. Body Paragraph 1: Schools have tough budgets to balance each year as they strive to meet the basic necessities for their classrooms; therefore, eliminating sports would help to relieve schools from this massive problem. In the article titled “Yes, It’s Time To Scale Back” by Amanda Ripley, the text states, “Superintendent Ernest Singleton made a bold decision. He canceled sports, all of them. By doing this he saved $150,000 in one year” (10-11). The article also explains that “Maintaining a grass field, can take almost $20,000 a year. Ripley states that, “Sports can even dictate when schools start; despite research showing that later start times improve student performance”(10). ”Many schools start before 8 a.m, partly to reserve afternoon daytime hours for practice”(RIpley 10). The data shows that schools would put sports before studies, an outrageous action. Later start times enhance the student:success ratio, something that is imperative in schools around the country. Conclusion: It is easy to see that over many years, the idea of extracurricular activities has daunted schools due to the numerous problems they cause. Sports deplete a school's budget, lower student-athlete grades, and even decide when school starts. Therefore, if schools could exterminate sports it would significantly help students due to the fact that the activities distract them from their
Over the course of time, schools have invested all their finances on sports like football. Primarily, the sport had initiated as a form of recreational fun, but therefore lead into a trend. This popular trend later spread into competitiveness and in some schools, even idolized. At Premont High School, a small school in Texas, it was threatening to be shut down for the neglection of academics and a misuse of finance. All money funded was focused on being used to support all sports and the money raised, was a large amount of money. The solution was to suspend all sports and with that, changes were made. Teachers were retrained, the curriculum was raised to the appropriate standard, and too much avail, academics improved significantly. According to the article, when sports have been dominating, only 50 percent of the students were passing their classes. After changes were made, 80 percent were now passing. The author argues that with the suspension of sports, academics would be at a higher level than they are. With this argument, I agree with Ripley’s motion to cancel all sports. To many students, such as myself, it may seem irrational and absurd at first, but realistically it is a reasonable solution. Tons of money is being spent primarily to a sport and most times, aren't even at a winning season. Sports should not the prime focus. Schools are not instituted to emphasis on sports
Sports are a crucial part of an individual 's character. Counter arguments made against having sports at schools are getting more and more public. Amanda Ripley’s idea that athletics are a distraction in “The Case Against High-School Sports” sparked within me the question of whether all people are equally distracted by athletics in an environment which is heavily focused on academics. The author states, “During football season in particular, the focus of American principals, teachers, and students shifts inexorably away from academics.” I can clearly remember a day last May in high school where I had a late football practice and two AP test the following morning. I recall waking up very tired, sluggish, and upset that I did not get a last minute chance to look over my materials. Amanda Ripley argues in The Atlantic in her article “The Case Against High School Sports”, that the United States place too much attention on sports rather than academics. Ripley argues that sports programs at schools should be reduced, maybe even cut out completely. She states that there are a lot of countries that outperform America on international tests, and it is because they put more of their emphasis on academics, where the United States puts more of an emphasis on athletics. Ripley says that high school sports negatively affects academics. (1). I disagree with Ripley on this topic; I think that sports are important for young kids because it teaches them very valuable life lessons and it keeps them out of trouble.
One option is something Premont High school employed: cutting sports out of schools altogether. This option worked well for Premont; it saved them money, improved academics, and helped decrease behavior issues (5-8). The only foreseeable issue, other than community disapproval, would be the fact that the school would have to cut all other extra-curricular activities. The more moderate, and possibly sensible, solution would be to greatly downsize the budget allotted for high-school sports. The greatest amount of funding would go to academics, and all extra-curricular activities and organizations would receive the same amount of funding. No matter what solution schools employ there will be pushback from the community, but a solution is necessary. Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
When I go to a gymnastics meet and do really good, so I get that 1st place medal or trophy. It feels amazing, I mean the sport gymnastics is competitive and I sure do love competitive sports. The competitiveness gets you that rush of excitement. You feel nervous, but excited to get in there and try your hardest. Kids make better choices and have committed when they have the drawbacks of participating in competitive youth sports.
After reading " The Case Against High School Sports" by Amanda Ripley started to make me think. There were many strong points about how the priorities of the sports are beginning to be more important to students than their education. Another great point was that the financing and budgeting is unfairly distributed throughout school districts and is spent more on athletics and clubs and not enough on classes. And I Believe that schools should put certain restrictions on the spending and promoting or in school sports and clubs because of the major drop in national and world comparisons.
Many schools don’t support the need of sports in sixth grade which has some negative and positive factors to it. Sports affect many students in a positive way like me; it brings joy to our faces. Today, sixth graders have engaged in sports in non-school, but community sports because students aren’t allowed to get involved in school functioned sports. Fort Bend ISD has banned sixth graders to be involved in any such sport because how “young” they are. I consider FBISD should allow sixth graders having sports.Quite a few students enjoy being part of a team, learning, being physically active. While it is the view of those sports may distract students from academics allowing them to participate in school functions sports will benefit to get better grades, build character, and create anthecentive for exercise.
When schools make budget cuts, they usually take money from athletic programs and clubs. The author is essentially saying that schools have taken away funding from too many programs that it feels as if they will will even stop funding necessary programs in order to say money. This critique on budget cuts helps us see the problem within the public school system. Certain activities that are common in other schools will be seen as a luxury to students in other schools and therefor are not given the same opportunities. The underfunded schools have taken away money from many programs that they will now have to stop funding certain areas that are key to a student’s education.
There are many reasons school sports are beneficial to young athletes. That does not mean there are no problems with them at all because there are. Researches that work for High School Reporting Information Online (RIO) estimated that during the 2005-2006 football season, there were 517,726 football-related injuries. Not only that but from 200 to 2005, over 200,000 non-fatal injuries to the brain were related to football. These numbers are not positive to support school sports, and it is right to want to try and fix those numbers, but cutting sport funds is not the way to rid this problem.
Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
Because these schools don’t have enough money to provide the resources to educate their students, it is likely they are unable to expend funds on sports activities. Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
