I once heard someone say that lack of sleep hinders your ability to think accurately. Without adequate amount of sleep can cause someone to make unwanted decisions that can later be regretful. What is sleep? Scientists over time have tried not only to define sleep, but also to understand why we need it. According some studies of Harvard Education, their definition of sleep is tied to brain waves and other psychological functions. The ideal amount of sleep has changed over time. Yet studies show that an individual requires anywhere from 8-10 hours of sleep. The body needs sleep to recuperate from the excessive activities that are done within an average lifestyle. How great of an impact does sleep loss have on individuals who may start to show signs of psychological concerns? Sleep loss raises many concerns in those between the ages of 18-25. The age group which is considered as the young adults. At this age individuals are starting their independent lives. Realizing that you have the freedom to do a little more being that you are out from under your parents. This is also where individuals may be in their college years. They are engaging more with college peers and attending social events. Young adults who are in college tend to juggle their studies, social and personal lives. Over time sleep loss becomes prevalent. Over exertion takes a toll on an individual’s mental state of mind. Not to dismiss the fact new found independency can become overwhelming which aids in mental issues such as depression, bipolar, and or schizophrenia. Although sleep loss has a psychological impact on young adults, it is not the sole cause. Although sleep may have a range of what goes on while one is asleep, it is no question as to why we need it. Dr. James P. Maas fully understands the need for sleep.
