Growing up, I never thought much about love or what it even really meant. I was raised to believe that it was only “normal” to be attracted to women and that one day, I will live with one and become married to her. Many of my peers from elementary school or the neighborhood would express their negative feelings towards same sex couples, though I never thought much of it. It didn’t affect me until the age of 14, when one of my closest friends, Cobia, openly admitted to me that he liked a boy in his Spanish class. At first, I was in shock. “How could this even be possible?” I asked myself. But, after much thought, I realized that Cobia had not changed in any way. We may love a song, type of clothing, or even a pet. Most importantly, we love other people, whether that is a boy or a girl. We grew up believing that it was only correct for a boy to love a girl or a girl to love a boy. If a boy were to love a boy or a girl loves another girl, it was seen as something odd or out of place. In 2012, Macklemore changed this criticism and opened my eyes to how gays were being treated by society. “Same Love” comes from a first person point of view, beginning with an explanation of how Macklemore had beliefs of being gay at a young age and that being religious and going to church talked him out of the idea. He says that “God loves all his children” is somehow forgotten, showing that it is silly to hate homosexuals if everyone is truly in the hands of God. He continues to explain the hate people express against homosexuals in society. He says that he believes that if he were gay, some of his fans would hate him and that people use the word “gay” to describe something other than the true meaning: loving someone of the same sex. He then begins an inspiration movement basically stating that we need to stand up for what is right and make our own
