There are many people in this world who are affected by poverty every day. Those that are in poverty are at risk of not having a good education and receiving a college degree because they cannot afford it. Not having a good education can have a negative impact on one’s lifestyle, so more people need to receive a college degree; especially those who have the potential. Having a college degree is highly necessary for students who are less fortunate because it opens doors to many opportunities and it gives them a higher chance to receive a well-paying job. They set a goal for themselves, and worked their way to achieving it. It’s as simple as finding what truly motivates you, and taking baby steps to strive towards an education. Remember one has to crawl before he or she can walk. These students wanted a better lifestyle because they knew nothing good would come out of not having a college degree. In the article, “The Voices Behind the Numbers: Understanding the Experiences of Homeless Students.” authors Erica Mohan of Community Education Partnerships and Carolyn M. Shields of Wayne State University explain why the people struggling with poverty are at risk for getting an education. They do this by stating “In a given year, approximately 1.6 million children in the United States experience homelessness, and research shows that their living conditions generally place these children at risk for educational underperformance and failure at school” (Mohan). Children grow up to not be able to support themselves because they were raised in a household that never had much financial support to begin with. This is why getting a college degree is important because one can obtain a well-paying job. With that, one can provide for themselves and their families, allowing their kids to have the same resources of attaining a college degree as well. The constant question is why don’t they go get help, or what did they do to become like this? The question that should be asked is how will America fix this? I chose this topic because education is all around me. I am literally surrounded by illiteracy. From the moment I leave my door, to the moment I return, I am able to witness illiteracy in my society. Therefore, I could connect well to this particular topic in detail. So many children younger than me, of my age and also people elder to me do not have access to education. Even though 86.1% of the world is illiterate (CIA World Factbook), the other 14.9% have absolutely no access to education!

Parents in poverty have a lot on their plate and buying the best quality food or affording enough food can be a tumultuous task. Quality nutrition is essential for the development of the brain. At a young age, poor nutrition or not enough nutrition can seriously hinder “the brain 's development, a child’s ability to learn and has a devastating impact on a child’s future”(The Information Daily). “Malnutrition in the early developmental stages of the brain, by restricting the children’s cognitive growth, can lower a child 's IQ has much has 20 points”(The Information Daily). Long term effects of malnutrition leave permanent damage to the brain, however, malnutrition has short term effects as well. Malnourishment can greatly compromise a child’s immune system, making them more susceptible to infectious diseases. “Low counts of zinc, iron and vitamin A are commonly associated with weakened immune function” (Orphan Nutrition). Poverty is in our own backyard. Poverty isn’t turning around a globe and looking toward third world countries for an example. Poverty is everywhere. Poverty is the children down the street who go to bed hungry each night filled only with emptiness. Poverty is my neighbor who had her heat shut off this past winter. However I believe that poverty is preventable.
Imagine a family, a family that has it all. Good neighborhood, schooling, and robust health. Everything seems to be going right for this family, then all of a sudden one event changes the course of their future forever. The father makes a poor business investment which causes the family to loose their savings. Now that all of the savings are gone and they are living off check to check, they need to cut back on wasteful spending. The kids may need to attend a lower public school than the normal private school they once attended, thus causing them not to learn or advance at a level that they once could. Within the span of what could be not more than a year or two, this family has went from having a stable life to a family that is on the verge
