It is undoubted that we are exposed to more open and activating political environment today than ever. We talk about 2016 presidency election, criticize those candidates’ political claims, argue about political issues and disdain those who belong to different “side” with us. And it is under this social context that Planned Parenthood, all of a sudden, is dragged into the political spotlight. Before I focus on details about what makes it controversial, I feel it necessary to define the“Planned Parenthood” in the first place, as I believe the scope of Planned Parenthood is largely narrowed by both politicians and media. Planned Parenthood is actually the name of a …show more content…
Liberalists applaud Planned Parenthood’s contributions to public health (collecting dead fetus’s tissues for medical use) and its dedication to fighting for woman’s right to terminate pregnancy. Alternately, conservative side condemns Planned Parenthood 's endeavor as dangerous because they believe PP’s behavior actually encourages more people to abort and brings society with instability and turbulence. Recently, as Republicans promote their marketing about intimidating sides of Planned Parenthood, more people tend to feel disgusted about what Planned Parenthood is …show more content…
Therefore, I try to figure out a connection between those political controversy and human’s behavior. I don’t actually think different opinions are scary at all because speech is the right bestowed by the first amendment and what determines who we are. But by showing how misleading words can be through Planned Parenthood issue, I want to use this research to emphasize how important it is for an audience to think critically when faced with controversy and dissenting voices. Due to the progressive nature of my argument, I will divide my argument into three part. I will use the first part to provide a background of Planned Parenthood and the second part to analyze why Republican’s criticism on Planned Parenthood is inaccurate and should be doubted. I will use scientific evidence to prove that both to “Post Birth Abortion” and “Illegal Sale of Tissue” claims are wrong. For the third part, I will discuss some vital implications derived from Planned Parenthood debate, and how a political controversy like that teach us how a person should
Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that is government funded and offers free health care, sex education, and family planning to millions of women all over the country. (“Who We Are”) The organization was founded by Margaret Sanger in the 1960’s. Her mission was to provide free health care to women all across the nation despite their race, ethnic background, income, etc. She also vowed to educate and care for women’s sexual health while maintaining their privacy. As of late, Planned Parenthood has been a target of controversy, with a possibility of being defunded. Why or why not should the government continue to fund this organization?
We all know that Planned Parenthood is a charitable association that researches into and gives guidance on contraception, family arranging, and regenerative issues. However, society and especially the American people need to realize what Planned Parenthood does to the unborn children. Some think funding Planned Parenthood is a good idea without looking at the affects that is will cause and then there are others that see likewise and want to defund Planned Parenthood. When arguing the point on defunding Planned Parenthood the liberals and conservatives has two different perspective and argumentative points which both goes a long way trying to get society to understand both their views. However, both sides feel that their perspective of defunding
President- elect, Donald Trump, and Vice President- elect, Mike Pence, have stated their views on Planned Parenthood and how it should be defunded; especially Vice President elect, Mike Pence, who has a history of trying to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2007, Mike Pence introduced a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, and kept pushing for it until it passed in 2011. "If Planned Parenthood wants to be involved in providing counseling services and HIV testing, they ought not be in the business of providing abortions," Pence told Sarah Kliff in 2011. "As long as they aspire to do that, I’ll be after them." So after this troubling statements and bills, I decided to set the record straight. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit reproductive health care organization. It’s services provide STD testing, pregnancy prevention, contraception, counseling, cancer and HIV tests, and abortions. Planned Parenthood is a well rounded health care organization for men and women. They use their resources to help you not the other way around. Planned Parenthood is a program designed to help all human beings. Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be defunded; instead it should be keep being available to all human beings visiting or living in the
One major controversy in America today deals with the corporate company of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides health care, sex education, and information pertaining to anything in reproductive health care to men and women around the world. Over 1.5 million people get provided with sexual education every year through Planned Parenthood, and 2.7 million people in the U.S alone annually visit Planned Parenthood, and over 5 million men and women around the world. This company’s main goal is to prevent unintended pregnancies, and inform young and old on the measures to take if and when unwanted pregnancies happen. There are many different view points with this organization today, and currently it is a major controversy in the eyes of our government.
Abortion is a one of the most controversial issues in this country, and those who aren’t in favor, or pro-life, think that is morally wrong, and because of that reason they believe that the government should no longer fund Planned Parenthood. Those who oppose Planned Parenthood argue that their tax dollars are paying for these abortions by the organization by the government funding them and they claim that isn’t right. Another reason would be that abortion is the main service they profit from and focus on, and because of that they should be defunded. Others argue that even though funding does not directly go to abortion services provided by Planned Parenthood, that it frees up money from other services to be directed to abortions (Rovner). There has been progress for these groups, for they have lobbied state and national government, which has, lead some legislators to propose legislation that reduces or expelling funding in certain states. Amongst these states that have been affected are Tennessee, Indiana, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Texas, Kansas, and North Carolina (Keen). The state most affected was Texas, as Planned Parenthood was defunded completely, and 47 billion dollars were cut the organization (Keyes). Many groups also have pulled funding from Planned Parenthood, as a result of the controversy with the controversy of their abortion services. Many seem to believe that
Healthcare comes at a costly price, and many citizens in the US find themselves barely scraping by on their low-income earnings. So, they can’t always afford the necessary insurance to keep themselves and their families healthy. To help the underprivileged, “Planned Parenthood participates in a [federally] funding program called Title X… [This allows them to supply women] birth control, gynecological care, and other reproductive health services for women who cannot pay full price for health care services” (About Our Fees: Central and Western NY). This program does not pay for abortion, so in turn, abortion is their main revenue generator. Planned Parenthood is not just for women, though. They provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to more than 5 million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year. Getting the information out has two basic goals: 1. To let those who are underprivileged know there are options for them and 2. To lessen the need for these services, such as abortions and STD care, by educating those on the prevention of such necessities. Planned Parenthood does not just do this on their own; they correspond with many other affiliates to provide these educational programs and outreach to adolescents and
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that receives federal as well as state government funding. As per Lori Robertson’s article on factcheck.org, she states that “Planned parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in” Government grants”(Lori Robertson) As per government representative Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and a member of the Republican Party he believes that the grants that the federal government have been providing PPFA have been mainly used on abortion service and not on health services. While being “In a senate floor speech on Aug.3, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who cosponsored a failed bill to fund Planned Parenthood, also said that “abortion account for 94 percent of Planned parenthood’s pregnancy services”” (D’Angelo Gore). The organization also have antiabortion groups who also wants the funding to be cut. One of the allegation that Monica Miller a rally organizer made against PPFA is that “ The kind of sexual ethic that Planned Parenthood promotes is sex for recreation, sec for mere pleasure”(Monica Miller). Meanwhile, we also have the religious groups that beli...
Recently Congress has sparked a debate as to whether or not the government should continue funding Planned Parenthood. Too many people are uneducated about the many services Planned
Planned parenthood is funded for the low income families who need health care. If politicians “defund” Planned Parenthood and have their way, they will block millions of patients who depend on Medicaid and other public health care programs from accessing care at Planned Parenthood health centers. They also want to shut down the planned parenthood centers. If that were to happen, it would cause a national health care disaster. Many Planned Parenthood patients, nearly half who are people of color and who live in rural areas, would have nowhere else to turn for health care. Per year, Planned Parenthood health centers provide birth control for 2 million people,
Abortion has become increasingly common in America, even though many people such as antiabortionists are against it. The contradicting views concerning abortion are disparate and continual. Republicans’ and Democrats go head-to-head in heated debates over the topic of abortion. Arguments regarding anti-abortion and pro-abortion are addressed in two different perspectives, which “generally boils down to the question of whether the individual wants to see abortion banned” (Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice. (n.d.). The topic of abortion can be very touchy and controversial for many people to talk about. The supporting and opposing arguments regarding abortion must be explained in order to determine if it is humane or inhumane. Abortion on the other hand
1 Planned Parenthood has been a huge topic in the news. 2 According to Votesmart website, “Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. 3 (PPFA) is the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men, and young people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education. 4 With over 650 health centers across the country, Planned Parenthood organizations serve all patients with care and compassion, with respect and without judgment. Through health centers, programs in schools and communities, and online resources, Planned Parenthood is a trusted source of reliable health information that allows people to make informed health decisions” (Vote Smart, 2017). The Affordable Health Care Act has temporarily reduced funding for Planned Parenthood. I completely disagree with this decision. The reason for that being is because Planned Parenthood provides many different services to communities who don’t have proper resources for things like pregnancy test, contraception methods and STD testing. Abortion seemed the greatest concern and although I’m prolife I feel that there are other services that have been taken away from patients who truly needed
Since 1916, Planned Parenthood has provided affordable reproductive healthcare and has worked to better educate both men and women about their sexual wellbeing. Planned Parenthood allows people, regardless of gender or sexuality, to have a protected space to associate with individuals like them. A segment of our population argues that Planned Parenthood goes against their religious beliefs or claims that their tax dollars go to an organization that they don’t support- however, Planned Parenthood is a necessary program that supplies expert health care and information to people worldwide.
Planned Parenthood has been targeted by conservative due to controversy over abortion. I am pro-choice. I believe that it is the woman’s choice and only her choice whether or not she carry’s out a pregnancy or not. I personally would not be able to get one myself, but that is why it would be my choice. Pro-choice is not pro-abortion. It simply supports that your body is your body and no one should tell you what you can or can’t do to it. America was built on the base idea that church and state should be separate, but a lot of conservative reasoning for their pro-life arguments tends to be linked to religious reasons. I consider myself to be a very religious person, but I understand that my religion should not have a seat at the table when discussing governmental matters. Planned Parenthood gave women, who otherwise would not have been able to afford it, reliable healthcare. Not to mention that majority of patients from Planned Parenthood are minorities and lower class citizens. The people who are against federal funded health care facilities seem to only be upper class groups who either have great insurance or are so rich it doesn’t even matter. Planned Parenthood services includes cancer screenings, STD checks, and other general healthcare options. Abortions make up an extremely small percent of Planned Parenthood’s services, and the small percent that goes to abortions is not under federal aid. The argument that tax payers were paying for women to get abortions was/is completely
Among the many topics that were hotly debated during the course of the most recent presidential election cycle was whether the government should stop providing government assistance to Planned Parenthood. The primary reasoning Republicans and pro-life organizations continue their attempt to defund Planned Parenthood is the belief that doing so is the right thing to do to stop abortions. Not only will defunding Planned Parenthood not stop abortions, it will reduce many people’s (men, women and young people) access to basic health care services where potentially no option, other than Planned Parenthood, is available. As such, defunding Planned Parenthood is detrimental to public health and wrong.
All things considered, abortion will always be a controversial issue in which there will always be a debate on; however, it is crucial for women to have other options rather than to only be able to have children that they cannot afford, or to allow more children to be placed in an adoption system that can essentially prevent them from having a full and happy life. It is atrocious to keep forcing people to endure unwanted pregnancies that may cause them to turn to unsafe abortion methods if their reproductive rights are abolished.
