“Illness of the Mind”

One of the more important matters that are going on in the world we live in is mental health issues. Even though many of Americans are facing this horrible problem, the society stills misunderstand and look down upon these people. Many people wonder why people that suffer with mental illnesses are stigmatized in our world. The main cause of the stigmatism generated from the population is mainly because of the one-sided topics that are portrayed in the daily news, but the news is not the only source to project mental illnesses in a negative way. There are many newspapers, novels, internet articles, and etc. that portray mental illness as a disgrace in the society. Many of the sources only depict there message from a horrific incident that happened, not how unstable the person or persons were at the moment or how they have tried to get help and were denied. What is usually thought about is all the violent acts that have been blamed on to some mental illness or another. For instance the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was attributed to Adam Lanza being possibly schizophrenic. However, his illness is not to be blamed for the sole cause of this horrific accident, but merely a contributing factor in the build of a disaster. The reason people automatically assume that when a disaster occurs it’s due to a mental illness is due to the way in which it is portrayed by the media. In fact not too long ago a television drama titled Wonderland was released portraying “a man who suffers from schizophrenia goes on a shooting spree in Times Square and later stabs a pregnant physician in the stomach.”).
