Mothers without food are doubly at risk. Not only do they go without, but their children, who consistently need proper nourishment in order to grow, may possibly also go without. Evidenced by film documentaries in the past, such as the 1968 CBS documentary, “Hunger in America”, children without food stunt their growth, become addled by the overwhelming sense of hunger, and are halted developmentally, both physically and mentally. Throughout the country, families were presented with unique calamitous situations that deterred them from supporting their children with nutriment. Many families in America were ailing from hunger, and attaining malnutrition, and thanks to the CBS documentary, Hunger in America, the problem was presented to millions as a fully realized issue. Hunger in America is an incredibly influential and important film that was the first of its kind, a film that presented the issues evident in America. The documentary featured starving children, malnourished children with half-lidded eyes, inattentive and disillusioned outlook on life, along with the complications the parents have when attempting to find food and seek assistance. The lack of nutrition that was evident in children would later develop into deficiencies apparent as adults. Health problems would sooner become a bane for lower-income Americans, and the video translated those issues clearly for society. It was the first documentary that showed such images to reach such a large audience and most definitely had an overwhelming impact on how we view hunger in this country. While there were programs established such as the Food Stamp program and the Commodity Supplemental Program (Oliveira 7), the USDA had stated that those programs were not sufficiently facilitating infants and pregnant women.
