Living in a third-world country is not something I am particularly familiar with. My father, however, knows all too well what it is like to live in a place where people struggle to get food every day. Honduras is a country located in Central America, a region that is filled with poverty, crime, and gang activity. There is one thing that stands out about Honduras: it is beautiful. I went to visit my family in Honduras when I was young, and we visited a part of the country where the ancient civilizations of the Maya were located. I saw the ruins firsthand, and I was astonished, even at that age. They were breathtaking, and I could not believe that a society so far away from today’s technological advancements could create such vast and beautiful city. According to Rodolfo Pastor Fasquelle, a writer for NACLA magazine, “The immediate excuse for the coup was that Zelaya had violated a provision of the Honduran constitution.” (par 3). At first glance, the coup had seemed justified, but in reality he was considering legally altering the provision to allow a leader to extend his term (par 3). By all standards Zelaya was a decent president to the Honduran people. Fasquelle refers to the good that President Zelaya achieved by stating, “Once in office, Zelaya took advantage of debt relief and a window of international opportunity to reactivate the economy with the aim of creating more employment,” (par 8). He then goes on to list some of the beneficial things Zelaya accomplished while in office such as rejecting the devaluation of currency and lowering the interest rate on loans. (par 8). By all accounts, Zelaya was using his power as president to benefit the citizens of Honduras. On paper, there was no reason to throw Zelaya
