I am always busy between classes, projects, homework and other school related work, I usually do not take time for myself or think about issues that should concern me. This community gardening class has made me aware of the needs for sustainable gardening. Because our food, our land, our environment and our well living has been impacted negatively. The use of pesticides, herbicides and inorganic fertilizers has resulted of our land to be polluted. Gardening has many positive effects included, stress-reliever, improving team-working skills (use in community hardening), and create stronger communities. Many people have come to learn here and those same people have spread the word and knowledge on organic farming, sustainable farming and gardening skills. My best memories taking the community gardening class is participating in our, “sister gardens”. I created friendships and had fun working together with my classmates, from moving tree branches, picking up eggs plants and spreading hay on cover crops. By taking this class, hundreds or maybe thousands of students have leave with different purposes, some about building their own garden in the future, working in communities like the Beach Flats community or as educators. Before I started class, I knew about the Alan Chadwick garden at UC Santa Cruz. Something that caught my attention is the diversity of vegetables, fruits, and flower. Something that I learned through out this class is about the importance of diversity in gardens. Diversity attract many bugs and insects. The Beach Flats garden is an example of a strong community united by gardening. I honestly did not, “community gardens” existed. The idea of having this garden in a low income Hispanic community is brilliant. As someone coming from a foreign country where I know farming is everything. I talked to my family and friends and what they miss the most is being self-sufficient
