Assisted suicide/ Euthanasia Assisted suicide or euthanasia is a medical treatment to elevate pain in a patient’s life so why is this not available for them to choose. One reason this act is not legal is due to the fact that it can be abused due to mental illness. The act can abused due to the fact that people can be depressed and make rash decisions. In 1998, the New England Journal of Medicine took a survey where 11% of doctors said they had been asked to give a lethal injection. When asked if they had 5% said that they had given at least one lethal injection (Euthanasia). This practice of euthanasia, or assisted suicide has been around since the times of ancient Rome. Several religious groups feel strongly against these practices because it goes against their belief that all life is sacred. Some of the religions that don’t believe in assisted suicide are Buddhism, Baptist, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam (Religion and Spirituality). These religions believe that only the Supreme Being (God) has the right to decide when someone’s life will end. Assisted suicide not only goes against the beliefs of religion but also goes against the goals of doctors. The goal of a doctor are to help elevate a patient’s pain and to help the patients survive and heal. While participating in a patents death can be quite the opposite it can help to elevate pain which is another goal of doctors. Taking another person life can be hard thing to do but if it is to elevate pain it can be a heroic action which doctors have a responsibility to provide. While this action, to take another’s life is considered wrong by society it can help the patent by getting rid of their suffering and pain. The law on assisted suicide is strict, it was declared in 1997, by the Florida Supreme Court that “there is no right to assisted suicide under the Florida constitution” (Legal Status).
