Education in the United States has slowly and surely become corrupted and overcrowded. Education is extremely important for the growth and development of our economy and system of the United States. The public school system has molded students to come into society prepared and ready for success. The public schools have faced many challenges throughout the years. As time went on classrooms increased in size which caused more issues to rise. The mixture of elevated student enrollment, the increase in students dropping out of school, and the increase in competition between students is what is making the educational system fail. In the United States, a functioning democratic society has one main focus which is achieving happiness for themselves and their families. Diversity stimulates tolerance so that all people may have equal opportunities and freedoms to live a comfortable life without fear of judgment. Democracy is full of decisions and choices for the individual. For example, in the United States we as citizens have the freedom to vote, the freedom of religion, and the freedom to make choices that will affect the society and the individual. The freedom to choose your path provides a sense of control over ones fate, but allows for people to address bigger concerns like society’s needs and issues. “U.S have served our society well because they have embraced democratic values-flawed in execution certainly, but at least valuing democratic ideals” (J. Hoffman 111). Communication is important with societal problems because it helps citizens to evaluate the problems that occur within their democratic society. It provides debate to discuss exactly what needs to change in order to solve the problems of society and in the classroom. Choices give students a feeling of control over their academic future. Having choices in classes, schools, or curriculum enhances the student’s interests in any academic field they choose. Students are more passionate if they are learning something that they find interesting. “Working on their own projects, listening to others, trying to fit whatever direct instruction they receive with the material they are learning on their own..”(Nodding 130) Although Nodding was not saying this way of learning should be the only way but being engaged in the subject of choice may lead to finer grades and fewer dropouts. What can also lead to finer grades are better teachers. We face the dilemma of tenure in the United States. Tenure gives the ability for impassionate teachers to continue teaching even though they may find no merit to it; this is problematic for our schools because students are stuck with bad teachers and bad experiences. In the film, Waiting for Superman, the film illustrated the problems with tenure and how hard it is to maintain great teachers without proper assessment and the ridiculous systems they have to pass the inadequate teachers from school to school.
