Domestic Violence
Do you know what domestic violence is? Domestic violence is when someone has been physically, emotionally, or mentally abused. Some signs of domestic violence is when your partner humiliates you, threatens to kill the individual or themselves. Someone that has gone through physical, emotional, or mental abuse normally are more aware of the signs. This essay will cover the harmful effects of physical, emotional, and mental abuse.
Physical abuse is when someone lays their hands on an individual or family member. “Domestic abuse is described as involving the physical violence, sexual, emotional or financial abuse between current or former partners in an intimate relationship” (Bostock, Plumption, and Pratt 95). What the quotes saying is domestic violence doesn’t mean there is just one type of abuse. Several people that have come a crossed my path have dealt with physical abuse. One lady was severely abused that she suffered a severe concussion. “ In addition to the physical injuries already noted, ranging from bruising to death, abused women suffer from health and psychological problems” (Davies 5). People who are abused don’t just suffer from injuries on the outside but also on the inside.
Out of all the types of abuse emotional is the hardest one to overcome. “Victims of domestic violence often suffer from depression and other emotional injuries related to the persistent degradation of their self-esteem and psychologic functioning as a result of abuse” (Gerdes 42). Domestic violence suffers spend lots of money on counseling to get help. “They have a significantly higher level of anxiety, depression and somatic complaints than women who have not suffered such abuse” (Davies 5). Sufferers from domestic viol...

...ts released within 24 hours. Americans believe that the abusers should be in jail for more than 24 hours after getting arrested. The abuser always seems to have people on their side compared to the ones who actually get abused.
Domestic violence happens all over the world and not just to women but also men. “Violence against women is linked with feelings of depression, anxiety, fear, guilt, shame and stress for the victim, an increased risk of completing suicide and physical health problems” (Bostock, Plumpton, Pratt 96). Physically putting your hands on a women can cause women to have a lot of problems with themselves and others. Causing them to think horrible thoughts of themselves or of others because of what they have went through. They deal with problems that most people don’t deal with, they have to suffer with living in fear for the rest of their lives.
Domestic Violence is a widely recognized issue here in the United States. Though many people are familiar with domestic violence, there are still many facts that people do not understand. Abuse is not just physical, it is mental, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial. Many victims of physical abuse are also fall victim to these abuse tactics as well. An abusive partner often uses verbal, mental, emotional, and financial abuse to break their partner so to speak. It is through this type of abuse the victim often feels as though they are not adequately meeting their partner’s needs.
In this paper I will be telling you many different forms of domestic violence. I will include the physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, spiritual abuse, economic abuse, social abuse, and emotional abuse. I will also describe the "cycle of violence", teen dating violence, and why women stay with an abusive partner.
Violence or abuse can happen to anybody at any given time. The main purpose any abuser does this to gain or have total control over you. When people do this they are most likely to feel guilty about the situation (Abuse p.1, p1). There are two types of violence’s such as physical and emotional. Physical violence is the use of physical force against someone to put them in harm’s way. It is a crime and you will be dealt with (Abuse p.1, p2). The higher risk for most people to be hurt or even dead is the person or partner they are dealing with(Abuse p.1,p2).Physical violence is not picky about who it chooses the main targets are women because they are more emotional than men(Abuse p.1,p2). The second abuse is emotional, Emotional violence is dealing with your feelings and of your self-worth. Being a victim of emotional violence make you feel like there is no hope for you (Abuse p.1, p3). Emotional violence is verbal such as yelling or calling you out your name and it makes you feel unwanted or by yourself like you can’t talk to anyone. People who use emotional violence tend to throw a lot of threats of physical abuse as well as force them to do things that they do not want to do or deal with (Abuse p.1, p3). Both emotional and physical violence’s are real and they both leave scars physical and emotional that are hard to come back from or heal to move forward with life (Abuse p.1,
Domestic violence can affect anyone. Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another through emotional attack, fear, and intimidation. Domestic violence or battering, often, includes the threat or use of violence; this violence is a crime. Battering occurs when one person believes he/she is entitled to control another. Domestic violence affects people in all social, economic, racial, religious, and ethnic groups; whether the couple is married, divorced, living together, or still dating. Another reality is that abusers and their victims can be gay, strait, young, or old. Violence develops from verbal, physical, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse. Most domestic violence victims are women by men, but that doesn’t suggest that others cannot be battered or are perpetrators of abuse -- such as women on men, or same sex abuse. Battering or domestic violence, is now mutual and it is not a ‘couple’s quarrel’. Disagreements arise occasionally in all relationships, but battering involves every aspect of a relationship. While physical violence is the “enforcer” or the criminal act, other behaviors erode the partner or victim’s sense of self, self-determination, and free will; this is ultimately lethal for many women.
People do not fully understand domestic abuse as much as they should. It is not simple and the different forms of it needs to be explained more often. “Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional abuse” (“What is Domestic Violence?”). These types of violence can range from mild to severe. Mild abuse includes pushing, grabbing, shoving, or slapping a woman. Severe abuse includes kicking, choking, beating or using a weapon on women.
Domestic violence include sex abuse and intentionally or unintentionally use of physical force such as slapping, hitting and causing other injuries to your partner, children, friends, etc. A psychologist and law school professor, Mary Ann Dutton, who is an expert in domestic violence described it as "a pattern of behavior in which one intimate partner uses physical violence, coercion, threats, intimidation, isolation and emotional, sexual or economic abuse to control and change the behavior of the other partner." (Taken from an article in www.womenslaw.org, by Valerie Despres)
Domestic Violence Statistics states, “Around the world, at least one in every 3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime” (1). The United States Department of Justice defines domestic violence as, “a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner” (para. 1). Domestic violence is a crime that numerous citizens fall victim to in every country. Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence regardless of race, gender, sexuality or religion. Being a victim of domestic violence can affect a person’s way of life permanently and the way these victims interact with other people can become a difficult task and can eventually affect their future. Domestic violence is substantially wrong because it can cause drastic permanent effects in a person’s life, can cause physical, emotional and intellectual damage, and affects a child’s state of mind of what is normal and what is not if they are in a domestic violent atmosphere. While women are usually victims of domestic violence, men are victims of this crime as well. The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney states that, “According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, men account for approximately fifteen percent of the victims of reported intimate partner crimes” (Clark County Prosecuting Attorney, par.1). Physical, emotional, economic and physiological abuses are all forms of domestic violence that many people would consider to fall under another crime. There are many crimes that many citizens commit, but domestic violence is one of many that should not be taken lightly.
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person. It happens to all ages, all genders, it is physical, it is mental, and typically women are the victims of their male partners. Domestic violence happens in every corner of the world so the world needs to unite and fight domestic violence. Even though domestic violence goes back to 753 B.C, it has not been until recently, coalitions of domestic violence prevention agencies have provided help and guidance for battered women. If you have been abused in any way, then you should definitely get in touch with the organizations that are mentioned this essay to liberate yourself.

There are many different types of domestic violence. Physical abuse is the most obvious form, but this is not to say that outsiders always recognize it. Generally, physical violence causes bodily harm, using a variety of methods. Slapping, pushing, throwing, hitting, punching, and strangling are only a few methods. An object or weapon may or may not be used. There is not always physical evidence of physical abuse such as bruising, bleeding, scratches, bumps, etc., therefore, absence of physical marks does not necessarily mean physical abuse had not occurred. Physical abuse sometimes escalates to murder (Morris and Biehl 7, Haley 14-17).
Historically, domestic violence was viewed as only involving physical abuse. However, the more contemporary view of domestic violence has come to include not only physical types of abuse; but as well as emotional, sexual, physiological, and economic violence that may be committed
Domestic violence is a devastating social problem that impacts every sector of our population. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner(USDOJ,2012). Domestic violence can be physical, economic, emotional, sexual, or psychological. Physical domestic violence is an attempt to impose physical injury such as grabbing, slapping, hitting, biting, etc. Physical violence can also be withholding necessary resources to sustain health such as medication, food, sleep, or forcing alcohol or other drug use. Economic abuse is an attempt to make the victim financially dependent. Such as sustaining control over financial resources including the victims earned income, forbidding employment, on the job harassment, or withholding information about family expenses. Emotional abuse can be the attempt to undermine the victims self worth. This could be belittling the victim, name calling, insults, criticism, manipulating, etc. Sexual abuse is any sexual contact without consent. For example, marital rape, attacks on sexual parts of the body, forced sex, forced prostitution. Sexual abuse can also be an attempt to undermine the victims sexuality by treating them in a derogatory manner, criticizing sexual performance, or withholding sex. Psychological abuse is the attempt to implant fear. This could involve intimidation, threats of physical harm, harassment, mind games, and stalking. Psychological abuse can also be an attempt to isolate victim from friends and family member. Abusers can go so far as withholding access to a telephone, transportation, constant check ups, forced imprisonment, and undermining personal relationships. Dome...
Violence is displayed everywhere in society through media like entertainment, in their schools and communities, and within their homes. It is difficult to imagine living in a world without some sort of violence due to it being so prevalent in society. Many children have been exposed to violence in their own homes or have become victims leaving detrimental short and long term effects. There are three forms of domestic violence in the homes. They are physical, sexual, emotional abuse. People often think of domestic violence as having bruises or a broken arm, but in reality it is an occurrence that happens repeatedly over a period of time. One study concluded “children in domestic violence shelters found that almost half their mothers had
“I love you. I can love you like nobody else could. If I can’t have you, nobody can have you”
As professional athletes remind us on a weekly basis, domestic violence is a social problem which continues to plague the nation. Through stricter law enforcement, improved hospital reporting techniques, and nationwide education and counseling, this problem can be reduced. Domestic violence has many different names such as, family violence, battering, wife beating, and domestic abuse. All these terms refer to the same thing, abuse by marital, common law, or a dating partner in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence is not limited to physical beating. It is any behavior that is intended to overpower and control another human being through the use of humiliation, fear, and physical or verbal assault. Domestic violence is a very important issue in today’s society because it has such a profound negative affect on the abused, mentally and physically. Verbal abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse. Verbal abuse is words that attack or injure an individual’s self-image, which eventually shatters one’s self-esteem. In this paper, I will discuss the many kinds of abuses against women, the reasons why women stay in these relationships, and possible solutions to diminish or reduce the problems of domestic violence.
