Diet Soda: Not Healthy Caramel Colors, Natural Flavors, Aspartame, Phosphoric Acid, these are four of the main ingredients in diet sodas. Although products like caramel colors and natural flavors sound innocent, science weighs in and states otherwise. Research tested on mice, and posted by the federal government’s National Toxicology Program states that long-term exposure to carmel colors can lead to an increase in lung cancer. The term “natural” just means the products are derived from foods found in nature. Therefore, natural flavors could be any substance in the world. Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener that is made of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Aspartame may be tricking the mind into weight gain. The low-calorie sweetener makes …show more content…

A study in the journal “Stroke” resulted in proving that people who consumed at least one diet soda a day were three times as likely to have a stroke, or develop dementia as people who do not drink diet sodas. Diet sodas are specifically made for to trick the brain into thinking it is getting an extra dose of glucose, but the brain does not actually receive the added glucose(DeSalvo). In another study, Dr. Russell Blaylock shows how brain conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s can be caused by the simple substance of diet soda. Due to Aspartame and Monosodium glutamate(MSG) being in diet beverages, there are excitotoxins in the body. Excitotoxins are added to food and drink to stimulate nerve cells to death, and eventually will cause nerve damage to the brain. Dr. Blaylock gets concerned because excitotoxins do not only contribute to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, but the substance also contributes to chronic illness, learning disorders, psychiatric conditions, and even cancer. Doctor Blaylock is not the only investigator on this subject. Research was presented at a conference of the American Stroke Association that proved how drinking diet soda is linked to significantly higher risk of vascular events that correlate with dementia. New research in the journal “Natural Chemical Biology” has found that phenylalanine, which is an amino acid found in Aspartame, can form the …show more content…

The American Academy of Neurology has discovered that artificially sweetened drinks are linked to a higher risk of depression, at least by thirty percent. “Sweetened beverages, coffee and tea are commonly consumed worldwide and have important physical- and may have mental- health consequences,” says study author Honglei Chen, MD, PhD, with the National Institutes of Health in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. “Our research suggests that cutting out or down on sweetened diet drinks or replacing them with unsweetened coffee may naturally help lower your depression risk. More research is needed to confirm these findings, and people with depression should continue to take depression medication prescribed by their doctors(5 Serious
