It has been almost 25 years since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many countries came together to tackle climate change through the “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system” At that time, the effects of climate change was not conspicuous and the public knowledge of climate change was limited. Since the UNFCCC was first ratified, technological advances has been made, public knowledge has expanded and the climate change debate has intensified, yet it seems the current climate change regime’s efforts to tackle climate change were to no avail. Today, almost 25 years after the inception of the UNFCCC treaty, the results have been contrary to the global commitment; our global carbon emissions have risen to a historic high. Climate change continues to be a pressing issue facing the international community, and the effects of it has become more evident and prevalent than ever before. For all the moving parts and interests to work towards a common goal, there needs to have better coordination amongst all the actors on the climate change regime. Due its size and capacity, the UNFCCC needs to take lead on coordinating the ideas and collective actions of all the other actors. This top-down approach can help create a sense of direction for the smaller actors. Also, the climate change regime should coordinate the regulations, goals, and measuring systems to promote integration and facilitate easier cooperation amongst the many actors.
