Have you ever wondered if we are alone on Earth? In billions of galaxies, and billions of planets, how is it possible that humans are the only creature of intelligence? Intelligent life is few and far between even on earth, however, some scientists and theorists think that intelligent lifeforms are somewhere out in the nebula. The sheer, spectacular size of just the Milky Way galaxy can hold hundreds maybe thousands of intelligent alien life form, and in the word of Seth Shostak, “We’ll immediately know something very important. We’ll know that we are neither unique nor special”(Shostak 1). Not only are alien life forms alive and thriving on other habitable planets, but intelligent alien life forms similar to humans live on other habitable …show more content…
In the 1980’s there were less than five thousand UFO sightings. In 1990 the numbers doubled, making it ten thousand sightings. Sightings rose by thirty thousand in the succeeding ten years. There are an abundance of statistics to show the sighting records. Statistics show that you are more likely to spot a UFO in the United States rather than any other place in the world. There are 2,500 sightings per ten million people (Delzo, 1). That is three hundred times higher than the global median. With most sightings happening in the United States and a government officials coming out with shocking secrets, many people are led to believe that aliens have had some type of contact with human …show more content…
17 percent were skeptical that there is other life in some some far away galaxy. The last 28 percent said that they didn’t believe that there was other life out in some other galaxy. This study shows that most people in the world do believe that there is other life in other galaxies. So there is people out there that believe but there is also people don’t believe. A man by the name of Frank Drake came up with an equation that calculated how many advanced and detectable civilizations there should be in the Milky Way. The equation produced rather big numbers but if one were to fail the number would noticeably drop. The existence of of intelligent life means nothing unless they can make there selves be known. Which means they would have to manipulate radio waves and other electromagnetic signaling. Drake believed that only 10 percent to 20 percent of smart civilizations would clear the
To illustrate, the effectiveness of the article, she ends with adding that perhaps there is life on these planets. The author ends the article using a rhetorical appeal of pathos to appeal the audience that believes in extraterrestrial life. The author tries to use professional effective rhetorical elements to persuade the audience into reading the article and becoming interested in the news. Even so, the argument is effective towards bright individuals because it makes one think about what it will be if there was actually life outside of
The UFO crash site in Roswell New Mexico in 1947 was the start of people’s interest in extraterrestrials, the discovery of military secrets and experiments kept from society, and the start, in search of answering are we alone in this universe.
Finding life in our solar system could potentially answer the questions humanity has been asking for thousands of years. Sarah Seager, a professor at MIT, mentioned some of these thought provoking questions, “why are we here? Why does our universe exist? How did Earth form and evolve? How and why did life originate and populate our planet?” Answers to these questions could give humanity a deeper understanding of who we are and what our place in the universe is. Steven Dick believes that humanity has “… deep psychological yearnings for companionship, superior wisdom, or ‘an ineradicable desire to see the skies filled with life’.” Those opposed may argue that a biological universe will have little effect on humanity’s understanding of our place in the universe because a biological universe simply does not exist. One may argue that life is exceedingly complex and the odds of conditions being just right for the production and the sustainment of life are slim. Our civilization may have managed to beat the odds, but many its unlikely to for this to occur elsewhere in our solar system. The proof to back this argument is the N =1 equation. The only solid evidence we have proves that only one planet has beaten these insurmountable odds and produced life. While this argument makes logical sense, relying solely on evidence we have at the moment, takes our focus away from the
Ever look up at the sky and just wonder if there is life anywhere else? Have you seen anything in the sky that is almost unexplainable? What if your thoughts really came true? The thought of the existence of aliens seems to have been around since the beginning of time. There is one incident in particular that really hits home when talking about the subject, the UFO incident of Roswell, New Mexico.
A UFO fell in Roswell New Mexico in late June or early July in 1947. The day after a fierce thunderstorm, rancher W. W. “Mack” Brazel went out with his son on horses to go check on sheep. While he was out riding, he noticed strange metal debris scattered over a large part of his ranch. As he inspected the land, he saw a huge trench several hundred feet long gouged out of the earth. He decided to gather some the unusual material he saw and took it back home with him to ...
Paranormal Activity is similar to pseudoscience and involves experiences outside of science (Hines, 2003). However, there is another side to these strange occurrences which includes UFOs, alien contact, and the appearance of unusual creatures. According to Imbrogno (2008) “No matter how skeptical you are, there are three things that cannot be denied: that reports of paranormal experiences exist, that they persist, and they are increasingly occurring on a global scale” (pg.16). According to Hines (2003) “Paranormal phenomena includes extrasensory perception (ESP), telekinesis, ghosts, poltergeists, life after death, reincarnation, faith healing, human auras, and so forth” (pg.20). The term UFOs, unidentified flying objects, is the reported sighting of any object or arrangement of lights that do not have a logical or natural explanation. The first reported incident in America occurred in 1947, when an amateur pilot, Kenneth Arnold, made claims of a sighting while flying his small plane near Mount Rainier in Washington which caused the U.S. government to begin searching for extraterrestrials (Stephey, 2009). Moreover, Chinese texts from the 4th century make claims of a “moon boat” that visited once every 12 years hovering above the country to become the earliest sighting in recorded history (Stephey, 2009). Although issues such as speed, shape, and size continues to differs, the U.S. Air Force commissioned Project Blue Book, an official record of sights that occurred in the U.S. from 1952 to 1969 logging over 12,000 sightings or events involving UFOs.
...aptured a UFO and the occupants inside but the government quickly said it was then discovered to be a weather balloon and that was all. If that’s true then that would show the government is trying to cover up this whole theory of alien activity from us. Also in the 1950’s a group called FSWP (Flying saucer working party) was formed to try and get evidence of alien activity and of UFO existence. Also the majestic 12 documents surfaced in 1982 suggesting the government had high level interest in UFO’s and the document covered 3 pages of writing of the governments interest. UFO theories have been everywhere up until the 2000’s where they started to die off among people. Those where the theories on UFO’s that were strong amongst people.
Over a 1950 summer lunch at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the great physicist Enrico Fermi asked his colleagues an unexpected question – “Don’t you ever wonder where everybody is?” Laughter went around the table as everyone immediately knew that he was talking about extraterrestrial intelligence [1]. If life arises fairly commonly, as Fermi believed, it follows that there should be advanced civilizations with the desire to visit and colonize Earth close enough to do so. However, there is no incontrovertible evidence of aliens on Earth, either now or in the past. This is called the Fermi Paradox. The lack of observational evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence is known as the ‘Great Silence.’[13]
It is commonly accepted that the possibility of aliens existing is feasible, among the scientific community. Drake’s Equation and The Fermi Paradox are two well-known products of humanities’ view towards extraterrestrial life. Drake’s Equation is an equation written by Dr. Frank Drake to determine the odds of intelligent life and to figure out the number of civilizations in the Milky Way that seek to communicate with each other (Howell). The Fermi Paradox is the contradiction between there being a high probability of alien life and it’s the lack of contact with Earth (Krauthammer). The existence of aliens poses many questions for the future of the human race. The questions of where, what, and why are the foremost concerns posed when describing
Different cultures throughout the world have historical events, in their histories that are very much similar to what we call a UFO today. The oldest recorded sighting belongs to Thutmose, Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt around 1500 (BC) “…A circle of fire coming in the sky… It had no head the breath of its mouth had a foul odor. Its body was one rod (16.5ft[5m]) long and one rod wide. It had no voice.” (Brookesmith, 13). Days after this, the number of objects increased it was said that, “these things became more numerous in the sky than ever. They shone more in the sky than the brightness of the sun, and extended to the limits of the four supports of the heavens…” (Brookesmith, 13). What could shine in the sky more than the sun? These ancient events did occur thousands of years before today’s world of technology and modern aircraft. This supports the fact that these UFOs were that, Unknown Flying Objects. In the past they had to deal with this any way they could, some cultures used religion and the Bible. There are certain passages in the Bible that could be translated as being sightings of UFOs. In Exodus Chapter 13, verses 21-22, “…the lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.” (Brookesmith,13). This can be translated to the following as I translate it, it seems like these people were being led by a craft that lit up the night for them. This is a very convincing UFO description. Such an event at that time could only be inter...
. At the town of Roswell an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) crash landed in the quiet little town. Many Roswell residents testified that they saw a burning object plummet toward the ground before exploding upon impact. The Air Force's initial reaction to the incident was to tell the world that they did not know what it was. This shows me evidence that they had no “protocol” for this kind of occurrence, thus the Military leader stepped in and covered everything up. This incident caught the attention of citizens of the United States, local officials, and the media. It has especially gained interest in a variety of Special interest groups/ groups that specialize in researching and investigating events that involve UFO’s.

Undoubtedly, with over 10 000 cases, the sheer amount of reported UFO sightings and abductions is startling. In July 1947, an airborne object crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Rancher Mac Braezel examined the debris which appeared to be mostly metallic and plastic scraps. However, it was damaged beyond identification of its origin. He brought some of the material to his neighbours who attempted burning it, cutting it, and yet, it would not be damaged. They also tried bending it, too which it would dent momentarily before peculiarly molding back to its original form. Mac hurriedly contacted the local sheriff, who then, in disbelief, contacted two military officers to the debris field, also in dubiety, they brought some of the material they had found to the Roswell Army Air Base. Shortly thereafter, another local along with some students on an expedition, discovered a disk-shaped aircraft about two miles from the debris field, which had four small humanoid bodies scattered around its vicinity....
A galaxy, also called a nebula, consists of billions of stars, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter which are all bound to form a massive cloud in which we live in. Although it cannot be very well explained, dark matter makes up at least 90% of a galaxy’s mass. Galaxies also contain billions upon billions of stars and their diameter can range from 1,500 to 300,000 light years. That’s huge! The Milky Way, the galaxy in which we live in, is one of about 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe. Our Sun is one of the billions of stars in our galaxy, and our eight planets revolve around this star in only a tiny part of our galaxy. “The Earth’s solar system is believed to exist very close to the Galaxy’s galactic plane, due to the fact that the Milky Way essentially divides the night sky into two virtually equal hemispheres” ("All About the Milky"). It definitely makes people second guess the fact of there being life on other planets.
Another idea is that UFO's are not really from other planets at all, but created right here on Earth. Supposedly Germans, Americans and Soviets started the 'Projekt Saucer' in Germany towards the end of World War II. During the war Germans sent ships to the Antarctic with equipment and plans for a massive underground structure. It is said that at the end of the war scientists and engineers who had been working on Projekt Saucer in Germany ended up in this underground structure, where even more advanced saucers were created. In a manner of thinking this is by far the scariest theory should it be proved correct, for it brings up more questions than it gives answers. What would people on Earth want to create spaceships for? Why keep it such a secret if everything is harmless? Maybe, if this theory is proved correct, it is better not to know the answers.
